Our beloved family matriarch, Julia Elizabeth Bendele, 89, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2017. Her final days were spent surrounded by her many loved ones. She was born on February 23, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, where she lived her entire life. Julia’s love of family, friends, and God led her to a life of selflessly caring for everyone around her, along with many hours of dedicated service to her church. She was the perfect example of kindness, strength, honesty, generosity, integrity, and love. She taught us by example. Julia’s wit only sharpened with age, and she was as wise as her laugh was infectious. No amount of adversity, physical or emotional, could ever dull the benevolent light that naturally emanated from Julia. She enjoyed many activities and pursued countless talents and interests, including gardening, cooking, playing cards and dominoes, singing, and crafting. We all have treasures created by Julia – the priceless fruits of many enjoyable hours spent on numerous woodworking, painting, sewing, and other crafting projects. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends and bringing them all together to celebrate holidays and other special occasions and to treat them to her legendary array of delectable culinary creations. Julia was a humble and compassionate woman who always asked for very little yet gave so much. By far her greatest gift was her genuineness in enriching the lives of everyone she came in contact with; indeed, spending any time in Julia’s presence was truly a blessing. Julia was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her son Richard, and her ten siblings. She is survived by her children Barbara, whose husband David is deceased; John and his wife, Meredith; Kathy, and her husband, Fred; Janet; Jim, whose wife Cheryl is deceased; and Amy; 18 grandchildren; and an astonishing 25 great-grandchildren. Visitation is May 14, 2017, 6-8 pm, at Oak Hills Mortuary, 8332 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78229. A rosary service (9:30 am) and funeral mass (10 am) will be held on May 15, 2017, at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, Texas 78266. Interment will take place immediately following mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Julia's memory to St Gregory the Great Catholic School Choir, 700 Dewhurst Road, San Antonio, Texas 78213.
