Julie Schmidt Meyer, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away at her home on Saturday, February 15, 2025. She is survived by her daughters Karen Powell, Gina Pease and Gina’s husband Jess. Julie is also survived by her grandchildren Ken, Courtney, Sarah, Jacob, Rebecca, and Matthew as well as her great-grandchildren, Margot, Benny and Aubree. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James and her son Jeffrey. Julie was born in Cincinnati Ohio and received her nursing degree from Mount St. Joseph. She continued her education, eventually obtaining her master’s in nursing from the University of Texas School of Nursing. She was a military wife and supported her husband during his 20-year military career. She was a full-time mom until her youngest was in 1st grade and then she started her career at the University of Texas School of Nursing. She worked as an associate professor and primarily taught classes to LVNs who were working towards getting their bachelor’s degree and RN designation. Her love of teaching grew when she decided to specialize in diabetes education when her youngest child was diagnosed with Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes. She went on to become well known both nationally and internationally for her work with the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She also volunteered in her community by working on the Suicide Hot Line, Red Cross Disaster Relief, the Methodist Hospital Board of Directors and president of her neighborhood association. Julie’s care and compassion led to a very successful career, but she was most proud of her family. She spent many weekends camping and teaching her kids and grandkids how to water ski. She loved it when the grandkids came to visit and was always eager to babysit. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease shortly after she retired. For more than 20 years, Julie bravely fought the slow decline in her mobility. She was a great wife, mom and friend and will be sorely missed. Services will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church with a rosary at 9:30 am and mass at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park North. A reception will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church after the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
