Karen Lynn Hays Franklin peacefully left this life to be with the Lord on Monday, December 10, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born the only daughter to Rupert and Sue Hays in Port Arthur, Texas on November 9, 1960, Karen grew up in Corpus Christi and San Antonio graduating from John Marshall High School and the University of the Incarnate Word. In 1986 she married Christopher Phelps Franklin Chris and the two of them settled down in San Antonio for a happy life surrounded by family and friends. Karen worked for many years at USAA in Mortgage Banking. In 1989, Karen and Chris rejoiced at the birth of their daughter Elizabeth Brooke and in 2002, they joyfully welcomed the birth of their son, William Christopher Liam. Karen was a member of the Junior League of San Antonio and First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Chris; daughter, Brooke, and son Liam; her parents, Rupert and Sue Hays; her brother Steven Hays and wife, Randall, and their children: Hunter Hays, Ainslee MacNaughton and Taylor MacNaughton; her grandmother, Cecia Hays, her father-and-mother-in-law, William and Frances Franklin; Sister and brother-in-law, Blair and John Robinson; Uncle John Knight and wife Pat, Aunts Barbara Phelps, Janice Cavada, and Ellen Troupe and husband Jan; and cousins David Knight, Margie Ratcliff, David Phelps and his wife Suzie. Karen also leaves behind a host of friends, angels and saints who have provided support and love to her and her family during the most challenging of times. They would especially like to acknowledge Ellen Meadows and the extraordinary family of prayer warriors who have provided comfort, compassion, and community during this long journey. The family also wishes to thank the medical care providers at the South Texas Oncology and Hemotology Center, Dr. Gladys Rodriguez, Dr. Kyriakos Papadopoulos, and the staff of the SICU at Methodist Hospital for their kindness and care. SERVICE A service will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church childrens or mission ministry 404 North Alamo, San Antonio, TX 78205.
