Karen Kay Mickish Zemis March 26, 1958 – January 13, 2016 Karen went to be with our Lord on Jan 13, 2016 at the age of 57, the daughter of Lt. Col William Bill Jack Mickish and his wife Doris. She was born on March 26, 1958 in Dover and raised in San Antonio, graduated from Winston Churchill H.S. in 1976. After high school Karen realized many academic successes. In 1981, she graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center with a bachelor's degree in nursing and started her career as charge nurse in the Neurosurgical and Orthopedic services department at St. Luke's Lutheran Hospital. In 1983 she assisted in the planning and implementation of the opening of the Children's Hospital Emergency Department at Santa Rosa Hospital as Staff and Charge Nurse. In 1991 she graduated from Saint Mary's School of Law, Cum Laude with her Juris Doctorate. As an attorney in 1991 she began work at Wiley & Garwood, P.C. and in 1992 was hired at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital as Associate General Counsel and Risk Manager 1992-1997, General Counsel and Compliance Officer 1998-2004, following she served as an Attorney Consultant to the hospital. Later, she returned to nursing and worked in the hospice field and most recently retired from Harbour Hospice due to health concerns. Karen had a love for travel and with her husband Russell, they shared fond memories of their exciting travels together to many places including several Caribbean islands, Mexico, Belize, Grand Cayman, and their favorites in the South Pacific, Hawaii, Morea and Fiji. She had a grand sea shell collection, was an avid reader, enjoyed snorkeling, antiquing, making stained glass, painting, growing tropical plants, she particularly cherished the many plumeria's growing in their back yard. Her love and passion for animals was quite evident in the many cats that she rescued and cared for and in the love she showed for their Golden Retriever "Kenya". Karen was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Doris Mickish and brother Weston J. Survivors include her loving husband Russell Zemis of 35 years, brother Alan B. Mickish, his wife Paula of Weatherford and their 3 children, Cameron Steadham and Brandon Mickish of Ft. Worth , Lauron Mickish and her daughters Piper, twins River and Eden of Weatherford; brother Donald J. Mickish of Utah and his 4 children, Jennifer Handy of Indiana, Melissa and Miranda of New Orleans and Brian of Indiana, mother in-law Elva Zemis of San Antonio, sister in-law Cynthia Zemis-Morris, her husband James of Mason and their 2 children, Caitlin Morris of Washington DC and Carly Christopher, her husband Clayton and baby James of Austin; sister in-law Julie Zemis Helotes and sister in-law Elaine Fischnar, her husband Matthew of San Antonio and their daughter Misti Brown and husband Mark of Floresville. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in the name of Karen Zemis to San Antonio Pets Alive SAPA. Visitation will be from 6 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with a Chapel Service to begin at 7 PM.
