Kay Callahan Mandigo (Martha Katherine, though she couldn’t stand the name Martha) was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She passed away peacefully at home on January 20th at the age of 79. Kay was born on March 4, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Dr. William Paul Callahan Jr. and Jo Anne Aylward Callahan. The second of four children, Kay grew up with her older sister Patsy and brothers William Paul III (Buddy), and Michael in Wichita, Kansas. Kay exhibited her stubborn insistence on getting exactly what she wanted early, refusing to eat anything other than peas and Cheerios. Attending high school at Mt Carmel Academy she continued to buck the norms and expectations that drove both the Nuns and her parents crazy. Punishment seemingly had no effect. Upon graduation she refused to follow her parents’ directive to attend St Mary’s College at Notre Dame, opting for either the University of Hawaii or the University of Kansas, ultimately selecting Kansas—a decision that would shape her life profoundly. In 1964, during her freshman year at KU, Kay’s life took a serendipitous turn. On a double-blind date, she met the love of her life, Clark Mandigo II. As the story goes, Kay’s friend arrived first, prompting Clark to jokingly push his friend forward, saying, “There’s your date!” Moments later, Kay entered, and Clark knew instantly he had made the right choice. Thus began a love story spanning 61 years, marked by laughter, devotion, and mutual admiration. Kay and Clark traveled the world and shared a lifetime of wonderful experiences with their legion of friends, they may have had a little wine along the way. Kay and Clark married in 1967 and upon graduation from law school the couple returned to Wichita to begin their life together, raising four children. Kay excelled as a devoted mother, deeply involved in her children’s school activities and creating a loving, supportive home for her family. In 1987, the Mandigo family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Clark became CEO of Intelogic Trace. Determined to establish roots in their new city, Kay quickly embraced the community. She chaired major events such as the Witte Game Dinner and the Texas Biomedical Gala while ensuring her children adjusted smoothly to their new surroundings. The Mandigo home became a lively gathering place, with “Party at the Mandigo’s” becoming a cherished tradition. Kay’s legendary Christmas and Fiesta parties showcased her unmatched hospitality and warm spirit. Kay’s creativity knew no bounds. An exceptional cook and a gifted needlepoint artist, she founded Clark & Company, a business that reflected her passion for art. Through this venture, she curated canvases and yarns, inspiring others to discover their artistic talents. Many San Antonio homes are adorned with needlepoint ornaments, Christmas stockings, and other creations designed by Kay, a lasting testament to her vibrant spirit and artistic legacy. Kay is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Clark II; her children, Keri (John) Moses, Clark III (Camille) Mandigo, Molly Mandigo and her fiancé Fabio Mafra, and Megan (Thomas) Flemons; and her five grandsons, Jack, Matthew, and Jamie Moses, and Clark IV and William Mandigo. She is also survived by her brother Bud Callahan, sister Patsy Vizza, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Carina, Dario, and Pauline for their care and support. There will be a private Celebration of Life Service held at a later date. In lieu of customary remembrances, donations may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center or a charity of one’s choice. Kay’s legacy is one of unwavering love for Clark and her family, joyful celebration of friendships, artistic creativity, and boundless hospitality. Her vibrant spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
