Laverna Pauline Higgins (Price) entered eternal life on April 28, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 25, 1932, in Vega, Texas, she was the beloved daughter of Mamie and Lon Price. Laverna grew up in the Panhandle of Vega and Amarillo, where she shared a close bond with her siblings, Janel, Odel, Buster, Skeet, Leon, and Alvin. In her youth, Laverna worked alongside her mother at the family café in Vega. It was there that she crossed paths with a young man. She initially thought, “he was arrogant and I didn’t like him” but she soon fell deeply in love with the arrogant young man, by the name of Charles Higgins, and they were soon happily married. Their union spanned 65 years and blessed them with two sons, Gary and Nick. Laverna dedicated herself to her family, relishing the joys of raising her boys alongside her sister's children in the Texas Panhandle. Upon Gary and Nick's marriages, Laverna warmly welcomed Gina and Susan into the family fold. She found immense happiness in the arrival of her grandchildren, Conor, Nicholas, Chase, Zachary, and Timothy, whom she adored beyond measure. A day at Grandma's house was every little boy's dream, where they enjoyed the freedom to do whatever they pleased without Mom around to intervene with a stern "No!". Welcoming her great-grandchildren, William, Nate, and Jalen, brought her even more joy and fulfillment. Her devotion to her family knew no bounds, as she tirelessly cared for Charles in his later years. During challenging times, Laverna often found solace in reminiscing about her mother (who lived to be 104 and a half!) and her resilience and the sacrifices she made during the Great Depression, caring for numerous children with unwavering strength and determination. Laverna's love extended to her community, where she was known for her generosity, compassion, and love of card games, Mahjong, and puzzles. Laverna's spirit of love and faith lives on, as she joins her favorite Johnny Cash impersonator and beloved husband Charles in eternal peace. Together, they are surely indulging on grandma’s oatmeal cookies and jamming to “insert song”. Both of which are going to be missed dearly on this earth; Charles and Laverna, although the cookies and grandpa’s singing are going to be missed just as much. Let them relish in each other's company once more. A memorial service to celebrate Laverna's remarkable life will be held at Mission Park Funeral Home on Cherry Ridge in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, May 18, at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association are appreciated as a tribute to Laverna's memory. In lieu of flowers offer someone an act of kindness.
