B A R K E R God looked around His garden and found an empty place; He then looked down upon the earth, and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids, and whispered "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone, for part of us went with you The day God called you home. Maria de la Luz Barker, born May 22nd, 1933 in Guadalajara, Mexico, entered into eternal rest on July 22nd, 2009. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 50 years, William Barker Sr., & her loving son, William Barker Jr. Surviving children are Lydia Smith & husband Rick, Rodney Barker, Michael Barker, Thomas Barker, Theresa Barker, Mark Barker & wife Elena, Suzanne Barker, Elizabeth Berry & husband Tim, Christina Castillo & husband Jesse, numerous grandchildren, nieces & nephews & her friend Socorro Garcia who never left her bedside in her final hours. Maria Barker was self-taught in many aspects of her life which made her the strong person that she was. She started her business with garage sales & 2nd hand stores. After that, she, along with her husband & many of her children were founding merchants of what is now known as Market Square. Working many hours & with much determination & help, she built up her business & helped make Market Square the well known tourist attraction that it is today. Maria Barker was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, "tia" & friend to many. She was also a devout Catholic and a member of St. Gregory the Great Church & helped those in need whenever asked. She had a giving heart, a strong will & even a stronger & beautiful spirit. She was taken from us much too soon but we are truly blessed with the time we had with her & with the stories & the many life experiences that we had to share & will continue to share with others. Querida madre, nosotros te amamos y te vamos a extranar mucho y siempre estaras en nuestros corazones. SERVICES Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North from 3:00pm to 5:00pm with a Rosary to follow at 7:00PM at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 700 Dewhurst, San Antonio TX. 78213. The Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 10:00AM at St Gregory's with Monsignor Michael O' Gorman officiating. Burial will follow at San Fernando Cemetery III.
