Tributes

Ms. Marie H. Rangel was called to enter thru the gates of Heaven on Saturday December 6, 2009. Marie was the 8th of 10 children born to Pedro and Maria L. Hernandez on April 6, 1926. Ms. Rangel was preceded in death by; parents; husband, Paul Rangel; 2 brothers, Elias, and Pedro Hernandez; 2 sisters, Sarah H. Giunta, and Connie Hernandez; and 1 son, SAPD Sergeant Paul Rangel Jr. She is survived by; 2 daughters, Sandra Rangel, and Sylvia Alvarado and husband Jesse Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Raymond R. Trevino and wife Melanie, Richard R. Trevino and girlfriend Cyra Mortazavi, Jesse Alvarado III and partner Keith Franklin, Nathan Alvarado and wife Yaresi, and Paul Rangel III; 3 great grandchildren, Claire and Elizabeth Jones, and Mae Sylvia Trevino. She is also survived by numerous family and countless friends. Ms. Rangel was a beloved and respected leader who devoted her life and worked tirelessly as a Parent Advocate and spokesperson for the Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Disabled Community of San Antonio. She served on the Texas Department of Mental Health, and Mental Retardation Advisory Committee. Ms. Rangel was the founder of the MHMR Parents Club at Drexal Ave. Calidad that has been in existence for 23 years and still active. She had many careers to include Nursing, Natural Health Counselor, Parapsychology, one of the Supervisors for the Foster Grandparents Program at University Hospital in San Antonio, worked at Bexar County Adult Continuing Education and taught English as a second language, and the Child Guidance Center NISD where she assisted students with learning disabilities. Ms. Rangel was recognized in the Manchester WHO'S WHO Registry for the years 2005 and 2006. She was honored with the prestigious Award of Women of the Year 2006 and 2007 by the governing Board of Editors of the American Biographical Institute after being nominated by the International Board of Research for her overall accomplishments and contributions to society. Ms. Rangel was also a parent advocate as well as participated in charitable work for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers MADD. She will truly be missed but never forgotten for she will remain in our hearts forever.
