Martha Fanning, loving wife and partner in ministry with her husband, Buckner Fanning, died and was reunited with her husband in heaven on Monday February 12, 2018. A native of Dallas, Martha Fanning was intimately involved in church from her very first days on earth. She grew up in the First Baptist Church in Dallas and spent most of her time performing in the worship services, both as a soloist and as a member of the choir. She graduated salutatorian from Forest Avenue High School in Dallas and received a four-year scholarship to Southern Methodist University School of Music. She met her future husband while playing the piano at a Youth Revival service in Dallas and she and Buckner were married at the First Baptist Church in Dallas on June 5, 1949. She and Buckner then spent the next ten years traveling the world doing evangelistic work. In 1959, they accepted a position at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio where they ministered for 42 years. Martha was an accomplished musician who recorded numerous albums. In addition, she co-authored a book with her good friend Millie Cooper entitled “What Every Woman Still Knows.” But most of all, she was such an integral and indispensable part of Buckner’s evangelistic ministry, and he to her music ministry, that it is impossible to separate the two of them when speaking about their impact for Christ over 6 decades. Her greatest joy was having the privilege of serving Christ for her entire life. A very close second was being married to Buckner for over 66 years and partnering with him in ministry for all those years. And last, but not least, she loved her children, their spouses and her grandkids, who will always remember them as their “Mimi and Beau.” MESSAGE FROM THE FANNING FAMILY First of all, we want to extend our most heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to each one of you who have called, texted, emailed or spoken to us about Mom. It is incredibly uplifting and heartening to hear your words of testimony about how Mom touched and impacted your life. Your words help us so much during this difficult time and we want to thank you. Secondly, we want Mom’s memorial service to be open and available to anyone who wishes to celebrate her life with us. The details of the service are below… SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2018 2:00 P.M. There will be a choir rehearsal at The Fellowship of San Antonio at 1:15 pm on Sunday, February 18 before the service. Martha will be laid to rest next to Buckner in a private ceremony with family present at Mission Burial Park North. Her family has provided an opportunity to those who wish to spend a moment with Martha from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive. Martha was preceded to heaven by her husband, Buckner Fanning, and her parents, Kenneth Ewing and Willie B. Howell. She is survived by her sons, Mike and Harriet Fanning and Steve and Cecily Fanning; daughter, George and Lisa Fanning Pilgrim; grandchildren, Sean and Julia Fanning DelBeccaro, Michael Fanning Jr., Avery Fanning, Meagan Fanning, Hunter Callahan, Luke Pilgrim; brother, Bob and Margaret Fanning; nephews, Barry Fanning and Marc and Amy Fanning. We would also like to thank Carmen Garcia and Josie Leal for being like family to Mom, Dad and all the Fannings for so many years. In addition, we want to thank Christina, Mary, Lisa, Tamika (Angel), Cece, Ricky, Ali, Maggie, Roger and the staff at Heritage Creek Assisted Living as well as Susie, Barbara, Peggy, Shawna, Melinda and others at Encompass Hospice. Thank you for the being such a great help to Mom at a time in her life when she really needed it.
