Mary Florence Stines was born to Ma Clorinda (Torres) and Jose Andres Gomez on December 31, 1932 in Vigil, Colorado. She passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas She attended and graduated from West High in Denver, Colorado. “Flo” married her high school sweetheart, Arthur Anthony Stines, who she had known since elementary. Flo followed Arthur to San Diego, California where their girls, Karen and Sheila, were born. While in Denver waiting for her sailor to return from his military sea going travels in the Pacific a son, Anthony, was born. Flo packed up her family and moved to Alameda, California where they waited together for husband and daddy to sail home once again. Next, Flo and the children got their first passport and moved half way around the world to Taipei, Taiwan. Flo and all Stines military brats remained in Taipei while Arthur completed his third Vietnam tour. She busied herself teaching English at the University to Taiwanese doctors and knee deep in the committee member duties for the Officers wife club. She found batik painting and lapidary hobbies also. Upon arriving back to the USA the family moved to Corpus Christi, TX where she worked outside the home at the Caller-Times Newspaper for 10 years supporting her family while Arthur attended and graduated from college. Flo and Arthur moved to San Antonio, TX where Arthur continued to work for his Uncle Sam and she volunteered at Wilford Hall Medical Center. Next, Arthur and Flo moved to Yakota, Japan where her volunteer skills were implemented at the base Post Office. Flo and Arthur moved one last time back to San Antonio where Arthur golfed and Mary continued her volunteer career at Wilford Hall that in total spanned 29 years! She was a strong and talented Catholic woman who loved to cook, bake, sew clothing and make quilts. Flo also enjoyed a slot machine tango every once in awhile. But, her most favorite thing to do was treasure hunting at yard sales and flea markets. Her family would like to remember her best as a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. Flo is survived by her three children: Karen Barnes, Sheila Garcia, and Anthony Stines. Karen’s husband Arthur Barnes and grandson Arthur Dylan Barnes. Sheila’s Eric Stone and grandchildren Julius Deloy, Daniel Garcia (Jennifer), and Alyssa Garcia. Great grandchildren include: JaeLynn and Joe Robert, Jace, Aubrey, and Julius. Mary’s surviving siblings include: Joseph Amadeo Gomez, Gilbert Leroy Gomez, Frances Eileen Sandoval, Clara Jean Mestas. Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M. followed by the Service at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive. The Graveside Service will begin at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road.
