Matilda Gertrude Stanush Hans passed from this world into God's hands on September 25, 2014 at the blessed age of 86. She was the youngest of 10 children and was born March 12, 1928 in Converse, Texas to Annie Hudek Stanush and Felix B. Stanush. She is predeceased by her parents Felix and Annie Stanush, her husband Charles J. Hans Sr., her brothers Harry, Joseph, and Victor, and sisters Victoria Vicky, Rosie, Mary, Lucy, and Constance Tinka. Matilda was passionate about God, St. Benedict's Catholic Church where she was a devout founding member since 1959, and her family. She was known to be very sentimental, and a great resource for remembering birthdates, anniversary dates, and details of events that took place decades ago. She would frequently reminisce about life on the farm, walking or riding a mule to school, working in the cotton fields, helping her mama in the kitchen or in the field, antics of her brothers and sisters, proudly showing pictures of family weddings and all the things that life on the farm in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s would entail. After marrying Chuck, an Air Force man, Matilda lived in Germany, Florida, and Illinois before finally returning to settle in San Antonio across the street from her sister Rosie when Chuck got orders to go to Vietnam. She has always been the family's matriarch but really came into her own after her husband's death in 1996 by continuing the family traditions and get togethers, and continuing to cook and bake her always cherished cookies and brownies. Matilda's gentle smile and wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed by family, friends and all who knew her. Matilda leaves behind to cherish her memory her three children, Phyllis Sunny Burlew husband Bruce, Joyce Wiatrek husband Justin and son Charles J. Hans Jr., five grandchildren: Melissa Eastman husband Chad, Clinton Shaner, Katrina Burlew, Chelsea Wiatrek, and Lisa Wiatrek, five great-grandchildren: Aidan, Bridgette Matilda, Jason, Tiffany, and Riley, sister Sophie Coleman, and numerous nieces and nephews who all affectionately called her "Aunt Tillie". The family will receive extended family and friends at 6:00 PM, Sunday, September 28, at Dellcrest Funeral Home, 2023 S WW White Rd. ROSARY Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 7:00 PM, Dellcrest Funeral Home. MASS Monday September 29, 2014 at 11:30 AM, St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Father Eddie Bernal will officiate. The procession will depart Dellcrest at 11:00 AM. GRAVESIDE SERVICE Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Hedwig. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward in the St. John Paul II Parish Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for Mass offerings.
