Melvin Clay Martin, aged 83, of San Antonio, departed peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, November 20, 2023. He was born on February 26, 1940, in Donna, Texas, to Everett and Modean Martin, who preceded him in death. Melvin took great pride in being a Rio Grande Valley native. He graduated from Donna High School in 1958. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education, and a Master's degree in School Administration from Southwest Texas State University (Texas State) in 1964. It was during his time at SWT that he met Sandra Dawson. They were married in 1963 and embarked on teaching careers at Randolph ISD and Northeast ISD in San Antonio. After beginning his professional career as an elementary P.E. teacher, Melvin moved on to become the principal at Lackland Jr./Sr. High School, a position he held for 32 years. During this time, he forged enduring friendships and found great joy in connecting with the students. Beyond his dedication to education, Melvin had many interests. From restoring vintage cars for car shows to venturing into the world of antiques with his business, Mel's Mantiques, he and Sandra traveled the state and country in search of unique items. As a lover of music, he actively shared his passion by joining the SonShine Singers and Trinity Baptist Church Chorale. His involvement glorified the Lord, enriched his own life and provided moments of joy for those around him. In addition to his professional and personal pursuits, Melvin was an excellent fisherman. He avidly followed high school and college sports and was an unwavering fan of the San Antonio Spurs. However, it was Melvin's infectious laughter that became a hallmark of his personality. He used humor as a means of connecting with everyone. His playful teasing was a testament to the affection he had for those in his life. Though his physical presence will be missed, the anticipation of a joyous reunion in Heaven, filled with song and laughter, provides comfort to his family. Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra; children Kevin Martin and Kim Till, husband, Matt; grandchildren Madeline and Cameron Till; his brother, Luke Martin, and his wife Laurie; as well as nephew John Martin and niece Abigail Fox. Melvin’s Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, November 30th at 11am, Trinity Baptist Church, 319 E Mulberry.
