Michael Edward “Mike” Heaviland, aged 78, passed into eternity on February 15, 2018, after bravely battling a lengthy illness. He was a faithful servant and remained active in Christian service ministering to others with an active prayer ministry and his many administrative talents. Always the committed disciple, he served faithfully at many churches, most recently at Word Fellowship Church in Cibolo, Texas. Mike was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late James Albert Carl Heaviland and Thais Florene Booth Heaviland on July 27, 1939. He went to school at Wauwatosa High School, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. A proud Navy veteran, Mike served aboard the USS Kawishiwi. He later attended Graceland and Guilford College earning an Associate’s Degree. Mike spent the majority of his professional life as an Human Resources Manager with American Can Company, serving for over 30 years. Michael is survived by his wife, Pun Tuk Heaviland, of San Antonio, Texas; his former wife, Wendy Lee Hicks, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; children Suzette (Ken) D. Juel of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Walter (Ellen) M. Heaviland of High Point, North Carolina; Keith (Lori) E. Heaviland, Dennis C. Heaviland and his step-son, Nicholas Stephens, all three of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by his sister Carleen (Jerry) Shetler of Kirtland, Ohio, Susan (Dave) Cash of Lenexa, Kansas, Merrie (Kevin) Reed and James (Darla) Heaviland, both of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He has 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mike was strong, kind, and sensitive to those around him. He loved the Scriptures and was a dedicated student of their study, always full of thought provoking questions. He was the first to volunteer and frequently took the initiative to meet any need that he perceived. Along with Pun, the Heaviland home hosted Bible studies and an ongoing prayer ministry that lasted for nearly a decade. His administrative abilities were put to frequent use in whatever context they were needed. He remained a good and faithful servant that fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Mike loved life, his wife Pun, and his family and friends. The family of Michael Heaviland wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks to Community Life Center Hospice at the VA Hospital, South Texas Veterans Healthcare Fisher House, Lukeswings, and Word Fellowship. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Mission Park North’s main chapel at 9 am.
