Tributes

Mike James Skweres, age 94, passed away on June 11, 2014 in Austin, Texas. He was born September 3, 1919 in Brenham, Texas to John and Annie Skweres. Mike was a retired WWII Army Sergeant First Class and M.P. who proudly served in the China-Burma-India Theater, as part of Merrill's Marauders. He was a decorated war hero, who received many medals and commendations. Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina Pruski Skweres, his parents and two siblings, Henry Skweres and Jean Klussmann. He is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Rizzo and her husband Bob Rizzo, his granddaughters, Andrea Lauterjung and her husband Brian, and Monica Hanzelka and her husband Todd. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Lauren and Lane Lauterjung, Emily and Cole Hanzelka and his sister, Jo Pennington, as well as his longtime companion Cecelia Fisk and many nieces and nephews. Mike will always be remembered as a gentle, kind, caring individual, who gave generously of his time and talents. A devout Catholic, Mike was a member of the Holy Name Society and worked tirelessly for the church on many projects. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in San Antonio for many years. His numerous hobbies and interests included saltwater fishing on the Texas coast, music, dancing and gardening. Mike was born and raised in rural Texas and had a lifelong love for planting and cultivating. His fruit trees and vegetable gardens were beyond compare. He left San Antonio and returned to his hometown, Brenham, Texas in 1999. He reconnected with many family members and old friends and was an active parishioner of St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mike was a devoted husband to Regina, his wife of 46 years, and was her constant companion and care-giver during her final months. His focus in life was family and his commitment was unwavering. His values were faith, hope, charity and love. He touched everyone who knew him with his kind heart and gentle spirit. Mike was greatly loved and he will be profoundly missed. May he rest in God's loving arms. Pallbearers are Brian Lauterjung, Todd Hanzelka, Andy Pennington, Shane Lindsay, F. J. Red Mathieu, and Raymond J. Stavinoha. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. with a Rosary following at 7:00 p.m., Sunday June 15th, at Mission Park Funeral Home, 1700 Southeast Military Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78221 Funeral Mass to be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday June 16th , at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1314 Fair Ave, San Antonio, Texas 78223, with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78266.
