Tributes

Col. Newton Wallace Powers, USAF Ret., born May 18, 1918, went to be with the Lord after a prolonged illness on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at the age of 86. Mr. Powers was born in Amarillo, Texas, was a former resident of Galveston, Texas and had lived in San Antonio most of his life. He was married to his beloved wife, Thelma Lee Powers, for 50 years who preceded him in death. He is survived by his two sons, William Wesley Bill with his wife Maggie and Ronald Lee with his wife Donna, grandchildren: Matthew and Christina, great-grandchildren: Allison, Morgan and Jena, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from June 1941 and retired at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of dedicated service to our nation. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson high School in 1937 and St. Mary's University with a BBA in Marketing. His passion for teaching was evident by all his graduates from Burbank High School and San Antonio College. He was a member of Castle Hills Baptist Church. He enjoyed volunteering at Wilford Hall Hospital for over 10 years. He was a member of the Masons, Elks, Toastmasters, Boy Scouts and the American Legion. His wish was to stay home with his dog, Skinner, in familiar surroundings till his death. Bill and Maggie granted his wish with tremendous personal sacrifice to themselves. He passed away peacefully at home with his dog and his family by his side. Special thanks to Ida Cuellar and Ralph Gonzalez for all their loving care and support. He had special live long special bond with the Wagner, Howe, Copeland, Chapman and Mayer families. He had so many special friends, like his "Harem", who remained good and loyal friends for life. He touched the lives of all the people he knew in a very special way and he will be missed. We were lucky to know him! Pallbearers are: Charlie Wagner, Donald Wagner, Ralph Gonzalez, Matt Powers, Gail Howe and Jimmy Copeland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation. SERVICES Visitation will be held Friday, February 18, 2005 from 5:00 until 9:00 P.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 12:00 P.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Interment will follow in Mission burial Park South.
