Paul Milton Carraway was born on January 14, 1936, in Stuttgart, Arkansas and passed away on Oct. 30, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. Paul was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Archie Clark Carraway, his mother, Martha Butler Carraway, and sister, State Representative Anita Carraway Hill. Paul is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Wilkerson Carraway; daughter, Shannon McShane and grandsons Evan and Spencer McShane; and daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Kelly and Robert Lemke and grandsons Andrew and Daniel Lemke. Additional survivors include nephew Stephen Hill of Garland, TX, niece Ginger Sholden and family of Garland, TX, and sister-in-law Linda Todd and family of Arlington, TX. Paul graduated from Stuttgart High School and then from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Paul's career included positions with the Texas Railroad Commission, Gulf Oil, Tenneco Oil, and Hunt Petroleum. His years with Gulf Oil included a 3-year assignment in Lagos, Nigeria, where Paul and Sharon collected numerous African artifacts and developed a lifelong love of international travel. Over the years, Paul and Sharon were able to visit many European countries in addition to making a return trip to Africa via a safari in Tanzania. Paul had a deeply entrenched respect for our country's National Park Service, and many of his favorite memories revolved around family visits to various National Parks. For many years, Paul and Sharon took their four grandsons on an annual "Grandparents/Grandsons" trip to a different park each summer. Special favorites were visits to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Smoky Mountain, and Rocky Mountain National Parks. The family adopted the motto "leave no footprint" on these trips. It was important to Paul that his grandchildren develop an appreciation of our beautiful nation, and he considered accomplishing that goal an important part of his legacy. Paul was a member of the following organizations: Boy Scouts of America achieving Star rank, Order of DeMolay, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at UT Austin, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Registered Professional Engineer in both Texas and Louisiana, Sons of the American Revolution SAR, and the San Antonio Scottish Society. He was also a long-standing member of University United Methodist Church in San Antonio. He attended the Centennial Sunday School class and served as its treasurer for many years. Paul was especially proud of his Scottish heritage and was able to document his lineage back to the 15th century. He was a member of the Stuart clan and proudly wore the Ancient Hunting Stuart tartan. He was pleased to represent his clan this past year at the "Tartan Day at the Alamo" celebration honoring those Scottish ancestors who fell at the Alamo. Paul dearly loved his UT Austin Longhorn football team and was an avid fan throughout his life. Without fail, on game days his large burnt orange Longhorn flag flew proudly outside the front door. Paul's extended family represented a variety of Texas universities, so football season always generated a good-natured rivalry in the Carraway household. Friends are invited to pay their respects at a Memorial Service to be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at University United Methodist Church, 5084 De Zavala Road, San Antonio, Texas 78249, with a reception in the John Wesley Room immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the National Parks Conservation Association npca.org or the Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation wildlife-rescue.org in San Antonio.
