Paul Bertrand Wiegand, 59, passed away on August 30, 2012 at his home in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on March 17, 1953 in Austin, Texas to Oscar F. Wiegand, deceased, and Almedia Nesbit Wiegand. A man of deep faith, Paul and his family are members of Oak Hills Church of San Antonio. Paul grew up in Dallas, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Austin. He graduated from Austin High School '71 where he excelled on the varsity tennis teamand played cello for the school orchestra, University of Texas Junior String Project, and All-State Orchestra. Paul was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin '75 where he played on the UT varsity men's tennis team and was a member of Acacia fraternity. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from UT before attending Baylor School of Dentistry in Dallas '79. After a year of teaching at Baylor Dental School, Paul began to specialize in pediatric dentistry and completed Baylor's pediatric residency program in 1982. He then pursued further graduate study in the Orthodontic residency program at the University of Toronto and became a dual-subspecialist by attaining a degree in Orthodontics in 1987. In 1987, Paul moved to San Antonio to establish his home and his practice. He built a successful practice specializing in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. He was the first dual-board certified pediatric dentist & orthodontist in South Texas. He was active in, and served as President of, the Texas Association of Orthodontists, among other professional affiliations. He was deeply committed to the highest standards of dental care. He was a member of the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio Dental School1987-2012. Although he was a renowned practitioner within his profession, Paul's greatest love and commitment was to his children: Jon, Julia, and Kerry. Paul was a devoted father and deeply involved in the lives of his three children. Together they enjoyed many hours on the tennis court, listening to him play guitar, and awesome family adventures. All three children followed his example into collegiate tennis. Paul was passionate about all aspects of the game of tennis, and was involved throughout his life as a player, coach, and motivator. He taught tennis at John Newcombe's tennis camp in the summers while in college. Within three years he was the director of the camp. He was a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association and obtained USTA national rankings in singles and doubles. Tennis was part of Paul's daily routine all his life. In addition to his children Paul is survived by his mother, Almedia Wiegand Bannantine, and step-father, George Bud Bannantine; his brothers and sisters: Marc Wiegand wife Debra Leggett-Wiegand of San Antonio, Kristan Wiegand Beck husband Steve Beck of San Antonio, Jan Wiegand Haynes husband Ron Haynes of San Luis Obispo, California, and Tobin Wiegand wife Laura Megaw Wiegand of Austin; nephews and nieces: Lauren Hagy, Emily Wiegand, Christopher Hagy, Austin Wiegand, and Meredyth Wiegand. Paul leaves behind a multitude of family members, friends and colleagues. A memorial service to celebrate Paul's life of caring and accomplishment will be held at the Parker Chapel on the campus of Trinity University at 2:00 p.m. on Monday September 3, 2012 the main church building on campus. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Paul Wiegand Foundation, an organization devoted to the advancement of education, dental care and the sport of tennis for the children of our community.
