On October 13, 2024, Pilar Rodríguez González, age 91, departed this world for the arms of her beloved Savior and her Virgen María. In her final days, she looked forward to joining her beloved husband, Adán Amós González, her late husband of 58 years. “Mrs. Adán González,” as she always introduced herself, is also preceded in death by her parents, Tomás and Dolores Rodríguez; all her siblings, Roberto, Tomás, Élique, Manuel, Pedro and Graciela; and by her eldest daughter Adrienne Alyzela González. Mrs. González is also survived by her seven (7) surviving children: Ada (Michael Chase); Adán (Martha); Adrián (Ventura Garza); Adoleena (Mark Plunkett); Admeeda; Adionicio (Ashley); and Adeena (Armen Kouleyan). She is also survived by her twelve (12) grandchildren: Adán; Alexandria (Israel Armendariz); Asa; Paloma (Matthew Manríquez); Anastasia (Deyo Davis); Alessandro; Marcello; Joaquín; Patricio; Mark, Jr.; Mia; and Pavel. Also integral to Mrs. González’s family was Diana Martínez, her late daughter Adrienne’s life-partner. Mrs. González was born on July 31, 1933, in Laredo, Texas, and attended Bruni Elementary School and Louis J. Christen Jr. High. She graduated from Raymond and Tirza Martin High School as did all her children. She briefly worked at Three Sisters and The Parisian stores in downtown Laredo in the 1950’s before devoting herself to homemaking and to raising her family with Adán on McDonell Street in the Zacate Creek neighborhood. She and her late husband enjoyed visiting or vacationing with their children and grandchildren in Chicago, Cancún, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and Barcelona. As much as her children and family cherished Mrs. González, few outside her family who met and got to know her will forget her, whether they taught or coached her children; had sons in her Cub Scout troop on McDonell Street in the 1970’s; or were part of Martin High School’s “Banda del Animo” and its Band Parents’ Association in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Mrs. González also made many friends in the Martin High Booster Club in the late 1980’s when her son Adionicio played football there, and while she worked at Meals on Wheels in Laredo in the 1980s and ‘90s. Mrs. González also befriended the staff of Danny’s Restaurant on south McPherson where she loved to dine and dance with her beloved husband Adán in the early aughts. The late Mr. and Mrs. González graced the Danny’s dance floor just as they had in earlier decades at the American Legion Hall on Zaragoza and at the Casa Blanca Ballroom. Those whose lives she touched will fondly remember her as a fiercely devoted and sternly opinionated wife, mother and “’Uela.” Mrs. González readily encouraged and advised those around her, even troubled strangers, to contend with their and others’ frailties so they could enjoy life’s bounty as she did: “Es doña tu mamá,” many would say. Her children wish to convey their heart-felt thanks to Dr. Luis Benavides in Laredo for caring for their mother over her life, and to Dr. Angelica E. Davila and Dr. María F. Arbelaeza of UTSA Health & Science Center for their more recent care. A funeral rosary will be held on November 9, 2024, at 1 pm at Mission Park Funeral Chapel, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive, San Antonio. A Mass celebrating Mrs. González’s life will be held the following day at noon at San Fernando Cathedral, 115 Main Plaza, San Antonio.
