Martinez Raquel Z. Martinez passed into the hands of our Lord and Savior Sunday, 4/19/2009. Raquel was born 10/06/1928 to Gregorio and Elvira Zamora in Penitas, Texas. She attended and graduated from La Joya High School in 1947. Married her childhood sweetheart Luis L. Martinez on 9/10/1949. Raquel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and most importantly a devout Christian, the last 45 years as a member of St. Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church. Raquel was preceded in death by both her parents, sister Cristina Zamora, brother Amador Zamora and her loving husband of fifty five years Luis L. Martinez. She is survived by brothers Alejandro and Gregorio Zamora, sisters Elva Vita Laurel and Edelmira Millie Smith, sons David R. Christopher R., Courtney L., Luis L. Jr. Ricardo L., Antonio M., Daniel R. Layla L., Jason D., Dennis R. Michael D., Christina, Jose E. Eddie Martinez Georgia M., Jennifer M. L., Jeremy S. and Melinda Gordon Gene L., Christine L., Kevin A., Alison M.. Raquel is also survived by eight great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Family and friends of Raquel Z. Martinez, knew her as a remarkably strong and devout individual. Her husband Luis L. Martinez may have been the Captain of the Martinez ship, Raquel was the rudder. Amazingly when the ship started to stray a little off course the rudder would miraculously set the ship back on a straight path. Her smile, sense of humor, sincere advice to those that asked will forever be missed. Raquel never said NO to any request of her time or energy, she was a long time member of the Altar Society, Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, Eucharistic Ministry at St. Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church. We the family of Raquel Z. Martinez wish to thank Dr. Christine Toth and the staff at Fresenius Medical Care for all of the outstanding care they provided our mother over the past four years. Services Visitation will begin Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North from 6:00 Pm to 9:00 PM with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at 9:30 AM with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
