Tributes

On August 25, 2023, Raul Cavazos, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle was called by our Lord and Heavenly Father to his eternal resting place. Our dad was born on September 3, 1936, and left this Earth at the age of 86. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family. Our dad was preceded in death by our mother, Mary (Nena) Cavazos; his parents, Guadalupe and Amalia Cavazos; his brothers – Javier Cortinas, Baldomero Cavazos, Humberto Cavazos; and his sister Graciela Garza. He is survived by his four daughters – Molly, Anita (Husband Abraham Parazo), Melissa, and Cindy (Partner Allison Herrera); his seven grandchildren – Ean, Nicole, Matthew, Erica, Andrea, Alana, and Sage; his eight great-grandchildren – Elina, Evelyn, Avery, Nason, Aviendha, Aria, Lennon and Parker; his three sisters – Dora Mendez, Teresa Cavazos Ilginli, and Mary Lou Cavazos; numerous nieces and nephews; and his three fur babies – Bullet, Chico, and Joy. Our dad was especially proud of his career with the United States Air Force. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant, having spent a multitude of years as a Flight Engineer. His favorite stories dealt with his world travels on the C-5 Galaxy and the C-130 Hercules. Our dad was also a well-respected instructor with the 433rd Airlift Wing at Kelly Air Force Base. His ability to troubleshoot flight issues was innate to him and he was often recognized at the highest level of command. Not surprising, our dad was also a natural when it came to home and vehicle repairs. With four daughters, and his wife heavily involved in real estate, he was never without projects. Upon completion of each project, he would simply smile, dimples showing, knowing that he had once again impressed us with his brilliant ability to “fix anything and everything”! When it came to meal preparations, our mother was the most amazing cook, and our father was the most amazing grill master. Treasured memories of his barbequed meals will be forever cherished, and his “secret” barbeque sauce recipe will be forever missed. When our mother passed away nineteen months ago, our father became lost in his sorrow. He never wavered about his desire and need to be with our mother again, and often alluded to his “broken heart”. That being said, we find peace and comfort in knowing that our father’s journey to his final resting place is complete and he is now forever reunited with our beloved mother. No more “broken heart”!! Our family is immensely grateful for our father’s tireless caregiver, Olga, and for the staff at AMEDISYS HOSPICE who always responded quickly to our needs for help and guidance. We are also extremely thankful to all who have sent prayers and love during this difficult time. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, at Mission Park (Medical Center) Funeral Home, 8332 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, Texas, with a rosary starting at 6:00pm. At 9:30am on Friday, September 15, 2023, there will be a short service at the funeral home, followed by interment with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
