Roberto Serrato Gonzales, known affectionately as Robert, Papo, Gonzo or The Weatherman, was a man who lived his life with a twinkle in his eye and a joke on his lips. Born on September 29, 1951, in the small town of Charlotte, Texas, Robert's Earthly journey came to a peaceful end on December 8, 2023. In San Antonio, Texas, he passed away in his sleep, just as quietly and unassumingly as one of his cherished Western heroes riding off into the sunset. Robert's life was a testament to the power of love and commitment. He created a beautiful life with his beloved wife of 50 years, Modesta Gonzales, and together they raised a family that became his pride and joy. His children, Jaime (Roxanne) Gonzales, Sonya (Jesse) Butler, Andres Gonzales, and Adam (Jessica) Gonzales, were his greatest accomplishments, and through them, his spirit of kindness will continue to flourish. His grandchildren, Stephanie, Steven (Heaven), Mario, Avery, Quinn, Aidan, Ethan, and Ryder, as well as his great-grandchildren, Mikey, Alina, and Nickolas, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Though his parents, Victoriano and Guadalupe Gonzales, and his sister Mary Gallegos preceded him in death, Robert's memory lives on through his family and friends. He is survived by his brothers, Victor (Tules) Gonzales and George (Marylou) Gonzales, and his sisters, Janie (Lupe) Garcia, Yolanda (Ralph) Lott, Susan (Gilbert) Aleman, Sally (Robert) Flores, Anita (Arturo) Posos, Beatrice Pitts, and Helen (Leo) Rocamontes, along with his brother-in-law Benny, and a host of nieces and nephews who will continue to recount his legendary tales. After graduating from Pleasanton High School, Robert spent his working years in the oil fields where he worked not only with his hands but also with his heart, making lifelong friends and leaving a legacy of laughter. His colleagues knew him as the guy who could find humor in the grit and grind, and who could turn a long day into a memorable one with his tall tales and hearty chuckles. But Robert's true passion was all things outdoors. He was a master of the art of fishing, woodworking, and barbecuing. His fishing trips were legendary, not just for the catch but for the stories that would grow more elaborate with each telling. In his workshop, sawdust and wood shavings were the byproducts of his creativity, as he crafted treasures that would become family heirlooms. And when it came to barbecuing, well, Robert's ribs could make a grown man cry tears of joy. Robert's generosity knew no bounds. He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was his favorite one with the barbecue sauce stains. His sense of humor was as big as his heart, and he loved nothing more than sharing a laugh, whether it was at a family gathering or just passing the time on the front porch. As we say goodbye to Robert, we celebrate a life well-lived and well-loved. He leaves behind a world a little less bright but a whole lot funnier. Here's to Roberto Gonzales, a man who taught us that the best things in life are the stories we share and the love that binds us. Rest easy, Weather Man, your legacy will continue to bring smiles for years to come. Pallbearers will be Robert’s grandsons, Steven Andrade, Mario Gonzales, Aidan Gonzales, Ethan Gonzales and Ryder Gonzales, as well as a family friend, Thuy Hoang. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ben Brownlow, Will Brownlow, Paul Harris and Tony Moore. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with a procession to depart the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. Services to conclude at the church. At the request of the family, please send potted plants rather than floral arrangements in honor of Mr. Gonzales.
