G A L V A N On July 11, 1957, Roland John Galvan entered this worldon December 25th he left in peace to be with the Lord. Roland was raised in San Antonio, Texas by his mother Benigna and his father Joe. As a boy with wide eyes for the big leagues, Roland had dreams of becoming a pro-baseball player. Although that dream fell short, he would never lose his love to see the first pitch or hear the crack of a bat. Roland attended St. Leos Catholic School and Harlandale High School in San Antonio. He went on to attend Trinity University and San Antonio College. A college job at KENS resulted in work as a studio technician, field photographer and news producer. Talented but wanting more, Roland trained to be a television weatherman. With dedication, he made the transition successfully. He worked as a meteorologist at jobs around the country first in Beaumont, then Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Corpus Christi, Texas. As a meteorologist, he reported from the studio and on the scene of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and wildfires. He loved working in the field. Among many honors, Roland won two coveted Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for his work. WOAIs veteran television meteorologist Maclovio Perez says his dear friend was a gifted talent. Our generation got in at a time when there were few Latinos in the business. We went out to make our mark and many came straight from San Antonio. San Antonio has always produced quality people who did well in broadcast journalism. We should be proud of what Roland accomplished in major markets across the country. Roland never forgot where he came fromalways helping the less fortunate. He gave anonymous dollars to struggling non-profit groups and purchased sporting equipment for the poorest schools. His emcee duties at charity events raised countless dollars. Quick on his feet, Roland loved to dancecountry to cumbia..disco to merenque. He loved the rodeo, racecars, the snow and weekends on his beloved yacht in California with his dear friends. But what he loved most was his family his beloved father Pops, his brothers and most of all, his 23-year old son Jeffrey. He was deeply proud of him. Roland lived a long and fulfilled life and now as 48, he is with the Lord. Roland John Galvan is survived by his father, four brothers, his son, and numerous nieces and nephews. SERVICES Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South located at 1700 SE Military Drive with a Rosary recited at 7:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, December 28 at St. Leos Catholic Church, 4401 S. Flores St in San Antonio. Private interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South.
