Roy Douglas “Doc” Middleton, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, March 18, 2026. Roy was born in Sweetwater, Texas, July 12,1932. He attended South San and graduated from Burbank High School in 1950. His life was influenced by his coaches Jim Heiser and Clark Gordon and they remained lifelong friends. Roy played basketball and ran track at San Antonio College, where he won the Hallmark Award as Outstanding Athlete in 1952. He received many other athletic accolades over the years. Roy served as a Guided Missile Specialist at Ft. Bliss and The Presidio in San Francisco from 1953 – 1955, where he also played basketball. He finished his playing career at St. Mary’s University in 1958 under Jim Heiser and then became his assistant coach until 1960 when he took a teaching and coaching position at Peacock Military Academy. For the next eight years he taught English and coached, achieving the Rank of Major in the Texas State Military Police. During this time, he received his master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. In 1967 Roy moved to the San Antonio Independent School District coaching at Horace Mann, Edison High School and became the Head Basketball Coach at Brackenridge High School. In 1976 he moved to the SAISD Athletic Office as Assistant Athletic Director. He remained in that capacity for the next 19 years until he retired in June of 1995. Roy continued to work for SAISD Athletics in some capacity either as an Administrator or Supervisor until 2007 for a total of 47 years as a coach or administrator. Roy’s greatest feeling of accomplishment in his coaching career was not the wins but the many players who played for him, who later coached, taught or led productive lives in other endeavors. Roy leaves behind many friends associated with athletics. He wishes everyone “Happy Scoreboards!!” Roy was a long-time member of the Texas High School Coaching Organization, the Texas Athletic Directors Association, where he was Regional Director as well as State Secretary. He was a long-time member of the Lamplighters Dance Club serving as President 2001 – 2002. He was a member of St Matthews Catholic Church, where he was a hospitality minister. Roy was preceded in death by his parents Roy Monroe and Mildred McCleskey Middleton and brother Harold Lee Middleton. He was also preceded by the love of his life Doris Ann Frazier Middleton. Roy and Doris were married for 57 years. He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Fest, daughter Lisa Biesenbach and husband Billy, son Doug Middleton, seven grandchildren, Taylor Fest and wife Veronica, Lindsey Castilleja and husband Cavanaugh, Zachary Biesenbach and wife Sierra, Dillon Biesenbach and wife Kristen, Hunter Middleton, Hannah Holladay and husband Zack, Hallie Fleming and husband Alex, and brother Mac Middleton and wife Kathy. At the time of his death Roy had 6 great grandchildren. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and family remained his first priority and by his side at the end of his life. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic Church McDonald Center on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 10:00 am.
