Terry, as she is affectionately called by her spouse and close family and friends, was born Theresa Marie Jung in Springfield, Ohio on Sunday, May 7, 1939 to parents Evelyn (Malahy) and Stanley Henry Jung. She grew up in Springfield, the youngest of four sisters: Mary, Joan and Sue. Terry met Glenn Barnhart while she was in high school and working as a waitress. Glenn was in the United States Air Force and had recently returned from assignment in Greenland when a friend of his introduced them. Glenn and Terry were married on Saturday, October 25, 1958 and married for 61 years. During their lifetime together, they lived in Springfield, Ohio; Omaha, Nebraska; Rheinmain, Germany; and finally San Antonio, Texas, where they lived for more than 50 years. In the summer of 1965, they adopted Jeffrey Glenn Barnhart, and they adopted Jean Marie Barnhart in the winter of 1970, both in San Antonio. Terry worked as bookkeeper for Sears in her 20s and left when Jeff was adopted. She worked in the school cafeteria at Northside High School and John Jay High School for several years during Jeff and Jean’s school-aged years. She was a good cook and a proficient manager of the home, but she dedicated most of her energy and focus to caring for her family. Unanimously, Theresa’s family most remembers and has been impacted by her devotion to her family and her concern for others. She was a generous and special person, always trying to please people. Her attention was always on others, like buying things she knew other people liked and thinking about things that were going on in others’ lives. She seemed to thrive in family gatherings, and she was always working behind the scenes to make sure family holidays were complete and special. Terry was humble and kind while also disciplined and firm when she needed to be. She generally maintained a calm, quiet demeanor but was a staunch protector of her family when she felt something wasn’t right. Glenn remembers more than one occasion over the years when associates would let him know that Terry “had words” with someone she perceived to have been mistreating him - always in pursuit of his best interest. She did the same for her others. She was opinionated and not afraid to speak her mind when needed but always conducted herself with humility, discipline and respect. Jeff’s greatest impression of his mother was of how she coached, guided and supported him over the years. When she felt someone was going astray or getting tangled in the troubles of life, rather than berate, she would jump on board with them and point out the things that didn’t look right. She was good at helping others become suddenly aware of the problem and arrive at a resolution, feeling like they had figured it out on their own. She was proud but never prideful, confident but never arrogant. In this manner, she taught her children the meaning of character. Terry was also very patient and comforting, and these traits had a particular impact on her daughter, Jean. When Jean was growing up, her mom understood her when she would speak, but others didn’t understand her until she was about 11 years old. Jean remembers answering the phone once when she was 11 when Glenn and Terry’s close friend, Marlene, was calling. Jean remembers she could understand every word Marlene said and then handed the phone to her mom. Marlene was impressed and praised Terry for Jean’s progress in communicating. Jean says it is one of her favorite memories of her mom, and just one example of many of how Theresa’s patience, persistence and love resulted in persevering success. Theresa also loved her sisters dearly and remained in contact with them, though the years placed them physically distant from each other. For a time, she spoke with her sister Sue on an almost-daily basis, as life responsibilities allowed. They had a lot in common and talked about everything. They were closest in age growing up and maintained a close bond. Their oldest sister, Mary, was a dear sibling and also served as a motherly figure after their mother left the home and their father passed away when they were young. Terry also lived with Mary for a time during her youth. Terry loved crystal dishes and decorations as well as lace. She enjoyed collecting many things, such as Hummels, Buckley Moss pictures, decorative teapots, and coins. Terry enjoyed doing crafts, like molding and painting ceramics. She loved dogs and her favorite was the Schnauzer. She also loved the fish pond she and Glenn built in the backyard of their San Antonio home which they stocked with koi fish. Terry and Glenn enjoyed playing cards and games with friends and family often; they taught both of their children and all six of their grandchildren how to play Hearts and Liverpool Rummy through family card game nights. Liverpool continues to be a favorite pass-time for all the grandchildren. Theresa always put forth her best effort in her actions and went the extra mile to show care to her family and friends. Her character itself was enough to insist the same of those around her. Respect, ethics, integrity, and honesty were never optional to her. She did not bend or stray from doing the right thing in self interest, and she sought to instill these same principles in her children and grandchildren. In her compassion, consideration and service, she was an example to her family of unconditional love. Theresa’s health began the final decline in early 2019. Nearly a year later, she was placed in hospice care in her home in February 2020, aided by her family in caregiving. Her body ultimately succumbed to liver failure, and she passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020, with her husband, son, daughter, and oldest grand daughter by her side. Theresa is survived by her spouse of 61 years, Glenn; son, Jeffrey, and his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Jean; six grandchildren, Brittney, Joshua B. (“Big Josh”), Katlyn, Jonathan, Theresa (“T Rose”), and Joshua C. (“Little Josh”); two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gabriel; and sisters, Mary and Sue.
