Tributes

Virginia Ratliff Patterson, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was born on December 1, 1925 in Ardmore, Oklahoma and went to be with the Lord on February 4, 2019. She was raised in Arkansas and graduated from North Little Rock High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. and was affectionately called Sis by her family. She moved to Dallas, TX to work at the Southern Baptist Annuity Board as a secretary. While in Dallas, she met her husband, Sam Patterson, at a church event. They married, and moved to San Antonio, where Sam set up his dental practice. She was a steadfast member and energetic volunteer of the First Baptist Church San Antonio for over 50 years. Her leadership and organizational skills were widely utilized. During her time at First Baptist Church, she was the President for the Women’s Missionary Union and served on various committees, including multiple Pastor Search Committees. Virginia was also known for her love of being a Sunday School Teacher and leader, assisting with Mission Trips to Mexico, and being a long-time church library assistant. She also volunteered extensively with church community outreach programs including the 4th Street Inn food service. With her family, she regularly hosted Foreign Servicemen for Sunday lunches. She was committed to serving in Bible Study Fellowship, an international Bible study organization based in San Antonio, where she also organized the library of the Founder and Executive Director. She enjoyed an active social life, including Saturday Night Supper Set which met regularly to play dominoes. One travel highlight for her was a trip to Israel, including a stop in Vienna. She also traveled a number of times with friends to the Glorieta Baptist Encampment in Glorieta, New Mexico. She devoted her life to praising and serving God and joining with a great group of dear friends and prayer warriors. In her later years, she moved to Dallas, TX to be near family, where she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and keeping up with her Bible study, and reading Dr. W.A. Criswell's works who she knew well from her early adult years at First Baptist Church Dallas. She was a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs and Baylor Bears, especially women's basketball. Virginia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Sam Philip Patterson DDS; parents, Willard M. Ratliff and Esther Stricklin Ratliff; and brother, Henry A. Ratliff. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Mason and husband Jim; son, Paul Patterson and wife Betty; granddaughters, Diane McKenzie and husband Clay, Julie Mead and husband Anthony; grandsons, Tony Moore and wife Tara, Danny Moore and wife Ashley; great grandchildren, Preston, Greyson, Harper, Hudson, Bennett, Mabry and Katelyn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church San Antonio Missions Ministry or the TV Ministry.
