W.E. “TOM” RILEY, JR. With his family by his side, W. E. “Tom” Riley of San Antonio entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at the age of 93. He was born January 15, 1931 in Hunter, Texas to William E. and Emma Riley, Sr. who preceded him in death along with all of his siblings. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann; son, Gary and wife, Lisa; daughter, Peggy Riley; daughter, Penny Riley and husband, COL James Lombard U.S. Army (Ret.); grandsons, Nathan, Jason and Jared Riley; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Sauer and husband George, sister-in-law, June Steinbring; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was most proud of his marriage, children, and grandchildren, and he adored his wife more than anything. Growing up during the Depression, Tom lived a simple life and could always be found outside with his two friends, slingshots in hands. With birds, squirrels, and rabbits as their targets, the threesome helped put food on the table for their families and others during those troublesome times. His first job, even before he was of legal age, involved bartending at Riley’s Tavern (the “beer joint” as he called it), owned and operated by his dad and brother and issued the first beer license in Texas after Prohibition. In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served during the Korean Conflict. After his service, he met the love of his life, Mary Ann, at Gruene Dance Hall. They spent many nights gliding across a multitude of dance floors. In 1955, Tom became an employee of Samuels Glass Company where he dedicated 42 years and supervised many monumental projects, including the timely completion of Hemisfair. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman, and will also be remembered for his story-telling, humor, coaching baseball/softball, and teaching life lessons through his example. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. SERVICES Visitation: Thursday, February 1, 2024, 5:00-8:00 p.m., Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive. Funeral Services: Friday, February 2, 2024, 12:00 noon, Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church, 2515 Austin Highway, Pastor Ronald A. Windecker and Rev. Allyson Pryor officiating. Casual attire welcomed. Interment with Military Honors Wetmore Community Cemetery, 15041 Higgins Road. Pallbearers: Kenny Sauer, Scott Steinbring, Jeff Sauer, Nathan Riley, Jason Riley, Jared Riley.
