Tributes

Bill Collenback was a loving husband and father who gave unselfishly of himself to others. He was born in San Antonio, raised in Austin, but spent much of his time in Johnson City, Texas. Graduating in 1950 from Austin High School with a letter in track, he shortly thereafter was awarded a track scholarship at Schreiner Institute. While in Kerrville, he became the Pioneer Jr. College Conference Champion. Next, after graduating from UT Austin with a BA Degree in Government and Sociology and a minor in Texas History, he joined the army, serving in Europe with the 3839th Ordinance Group as a statistician in ordinance supply. He remained in the US Army Reserve for 27 years, rising through the ranks from Pvt.E1 to retire as a Lt. Colonel. This followed with graduation from the Ordinance School, Command General Staff College, and the National Defense University. Upon returning from Europe, Bill married his one and only true love, Loyce Lee Brown. They were married 57 years and have three children - Sharon and Randy Koncak of Cedar Park, Glynne and Helen Collenback, and David Collenback of San Antonio, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. After serving as an adjuster with State Farm Insurance for 16 months he then embarked on his chosen career as a State Farm Agent, retiring just short of 39 years. Bill and Loyce were charter members of Western Hills Christian Church. He served as a member of the choir and in positions as officer, deacon, elder, and finally elder emeritus. Upon retiring, he turned to his first loves - politics and ranching. Being elected precinct chairman of 3066, he was on the Republican Party Bexar County Executive Committee where he was active behind the scenes. Many happy hours were spent fishing, horseback riding, hunting, and raising quarter horses at his 5-C ranch. As an active member of the UTSA Roadrunner Club he sat on many committees. Both he and Loyce endowed two scholastic scholarships and funded several ecology and scientific scholarships. They travelled with the UTSA girls basketball team to several out of town games as their guests. Bill was a life member of The University of Texas Ex Students Association and was a member of the University of Texas System Chancellor's Council. He actively recruited for Schreiner University and was elected as a director of the Schreiner Former Students Association as well as vice-president of mentoring in the San Antonio chapter. Both Bill and Loyce were elected to the Schreiner Oaks Society. Bill's proudest moments were marrying Loyce, having their 3 children, being a charter member of Western Hills Christian Church, and serving his country in time of war and peace. Visitation will be Sunday March 1, 2015, from 4-6 pm at Mission Park North, 3401 Cherry Ridge. Funeral service will be Monday, March 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Western Hills Christian Church, 8535 Huebner Rd. followed my interment at Mission Retama Cemetery.
