William L. Groff, age 81, entered into eternal rest on February 17, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving wife, Marlene, and his children were by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Mary Groff, and nephew Stephen Ketchum. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marlene; children: Daryl Groff, Sharon Tondre Joseph, Dwayne Groff Laura and Dana Amaya Eddie; grandchildren: Travis and Emily Groff, Lauren Groff, Ashlee and Matthew Bates, Ryan Tondre, Jacob Groff, Madison Groff, Eddie Amaya IV and Melissa Amaya; great-grandchildren: Clayton, Levi and Grady Bates; sister Gayle Ketchum Joe Long, brother-in-law Leonard and Patsy Brieden, sister-in-law LaNelle and Henry Westrup and Sandy Brieden as well as many nieces and nephews and good friends. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, and attended Brackenridge High School. During an all star game for the American Legion Baseball, he met Marlene Brieden, his true love. They were married on September 1, 1952, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1953 as a geologist and 2nd Lieutenant. He was honored to be a part of the fish drill team. After graduation, he served as a tactical officer for OCS in the US Army at Ft. Benning, GA. and retired as a first Lieutenant. He was then employed by Petty Geophysical in LA. Due to an oversees assignment with Petty, Bill decided to move back to San Antonio where he worked for the City Water Board SAWS for 39 years using his skills and experience in various positions. He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church and a lifetime member of St. Luke's Men's Club. As a true Aggie, Bill was a member of the Association of Former Students for the Century Club. He was a director for the San Antonio Aggie Club and participated in the weekly luncheons. He was an Aggie football season ticket holder for over 20 years. He enjoyed traveling with friends for over 20 years from the East to the West coast. One of his favorite places to visit was West Wendover, Nevada, where you could find him at the Let it Ride table. Bill was loved by many and he never met a stranger. The family sends special thanks to Christus Hospice San Antonio for their kindness and consideration. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be directed to San Antonio A&M Club, Cancer Society or Charity of Choice. Services Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at 7:00 PM at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou Dr., San Antonio, Texas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 10:00 AM at St. Luke Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Mission Burial Park North.
