    Helen McLaughlin Cardwell

    April 29, 1931 - January 28, 2022

Helen McLaughlin (O’Neill) Cardwell, 90, of Dripping Springs, TX (1931-2022) Beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt & friend passed peacefully at her home on January 28th with her children by her side. Helen was born on April 29, 1931 in Portchester, NY to Michaell O’Neill and Jean Spence. Prior to moving to Dripping Springs, Helen raised children and lots of animals with late husband John W. Cardwell at their “Rainbow Valley” home in Elgin, Texas. Helen is survived by her six children: David Lawton (Laura), Kim Johnson (Tommy), Beverly Parker, Richard Lawton (Cindy), John Lawton (Cid) & Joy Bivona (Billy); her sister, Jean Lawton (Bob); Grandchildren: Jeremiah, Jacob, Rachel, Brice, Tessa, Jamie, Joshua, Jessica, & Jennifer; great-grandchildren: Arisa, Anthony, Barrett, Lincoln, Louis, Cameron, Cara, Weston, Natalie, & Camille; niece Wendy & nephews Bobby & Glenn. Our beautiful, sweet mother was loved by so many. Knitting “Prayer Shawls” for those who had cancer or needed comfort is just one sample of her kind & generous heart. Helen’s experience as a compassionate nurse carried over to her daily life in her caring & loving spirit. An animal lover, Helen spent her days of solace watching birds, deer & caring for her pets, Callie & Mikey. A natural sleuth, Helen was an avid reader of mysteries. A gifted artist & craftswoman, Helen was also a “songbird”. She loved to sing, whether in the DSUMC choir or at home with the Tabernacle Choir; passing that legacy on to her family. First & foremost Helen was a devoted, nurturing Mother who loved her children. [“A Mother holds her childrens’ hand for a while, but holds their hearts forever.”] We love you, Mom & will miss you dearly. Helen’s family extends a special Thank You to Magnolia Hospice caregivers for the wonderful care provided. We could not have done it without you! Helen will be buried next to her late husband John W. Cardwell, during a private service at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Helen’s memory can be made to American Cancer Society, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Paralyzed Veterans of America & Humane Society.
