Peter “Rudy” Hernandez June 25, 1933 – April 10, 2023 Rudy Hernandez went home to heaven on April 10, 2023, two months short of his 90th birthday. Born to Pete and Matilde Hernandez in Rossville, Texas and raised on a ranch near Poteet. He attended a one room schoolhouse later graduating from Poteet High School. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Pharmacy in 1955, initiated into RHO CHI Pharmacy Honor Society. He served in the US Army as a chief Pharmacist in Aberdeen, Maryland where he started his family, later moving on to retail pharmacy and eventually owning Gwyn Pharmacy in San Antonio, Texas. After retiring he had a need to stay actively involved in helping others and became a consultant for many unique health care facilities, as well as a relief pharmacist for a compounding pharmacy and University Hospital. Finally retiring from pharmacy at the age of 80. He was professionally active in local and state pharmacy organizations serving in various offices for 40 plus years. He was a founding member and peer counselor with the Pharmacy Recovery Network (PRN), a program dedicated to helping pharmacists who have substance use or mental health disorders to seek confidential recovery while protecting the public from any unsafe professional practice. He found this work very gratifying and served as chair of the state advisory committee, as well. He was selected as Bexar County Pharmacist of the Year 1990-1991. Rudy was a member, serving on numerous boards and committees, of Concordia Lutheran Church since the late ‘50’s. It was there he met his wife, Iris. He played volleyball on the church team and ran an open house on Sunday evenings for volleyball enthusiasts right up until he was almost 80, barely missing his goal. He loved the game and continued to enjoy watching local, college and Olympic competitions. Rudy loved his Texas teams always watching his alma mater UT play football and basketball, as well as the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially if it included food. He is preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters, one brother, and their spouses, and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife, Iris of 45 years, daughter Michelle Asher Scott, granddaughters Sarah and Daisy Scott, his former spouse and their daughters, Margo Gabriel (Reed), Misty Hernandez Leppla (TK), Melody Devereaux (Jesse), and a wonderful group of nieces and nephews and their children. Rudy will be remembered for being a man of faith, a true gentleman, reliable, and steadfast, a very loving and supportive husband, a wonderful dad, grandpa, and Tio. His patients (customers) and their families continue to remember him for his generosity and compassion for helping them in times of need when he owned his pharmacy. He will be greatly missed by all. His Celebration of Life will be held at noon Friday, April 21, 2023 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 16801 Huebner Rd.
