April 10, 1935 - April 23, 2022
Shirley Jean Cardwell Hunter went peacefully to be with Our Lord on April 23, 2022, at the age of 87 in San Antonio, Texas. Shirley was born on April 10, 1935, in Celeste, Texas to Chylais and Weldon Cardwell. She is preceded in death by her parents and her two sisters Sarah Cardwell Shruptrine and Patricia Cardwell D’Spain. Shirley wholeheartedly believed in marriage and had one true love, her husband Harold “Hal” Maurice Hunter, who preceded her in death in 1998 . Shirley is survived by her two children, Kevin LeStourgeon & his wife Colette and Tal LeStourgeon & his wife Becky. She was “Shooey” to her grandchildren, Nicole Humphrey & her husband Stephen, Stefen LeStourgeon, Chance LeStourgeon, Danielle Copeland & her husband Eric and Clifford Stratton & his wife Christina. Shirley was a loving great grandparent to her seven great-grandchildren. She was a loving dog-mom to her Maltese dog Babee. Shirley grew up in Bandera, Texas and graduated from Bandera High School in 1952. She relocated to San Antonio, Texas and studied business at the Draughons Business College in 1953. Shirley had over 25 years of experience as a legal secretary. However her biggest accomplishments in life were her sons Kevin & Tal and marrying her husband Hal. Shirley supported the military and had a strong sense of patriotism. She had a strong work-ethic, liked to be physically active and be outdoors and was known for always being early rather than being late. Shirley loved to share stories and was a fantastic listener. She loved to read, attend church and church events and enjoyed her work. Her favorite place was her home, often saying “I am just a simple girl.” To those that knew her, she was anything but. Shirley was loving, steadfast, classy and patient. She had incredible patience with her sons, she once let Kevin store his motorcycle inside their home. Shirley loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a church pianist at the First Baptist Church Bandera in high school. In San Antonio, she was a long-time member at Castle Hills First Baptist Church, participating in the singles ministry, bible studies, vacation bible school and faithfully serving in the nursery. Shirley sang beautifully and loved singing hymns and worship music. Shirley loved her family fiercely and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren grow. She had a knack for making even the smallest things fun and always knew how to make her grandchildren feel special. She was one of their biggest cheerleaders, always kept their secrets and was a close confidant. She faithfully listened to their stories, saved every memento, every craft and attended every event. Her family and grandchildren meant everything to her. In her later years, you could often find Shirley sitting outside on her screened porch, enjoying her morning cups of coffee (two creamers and one Sweet n Low) with her dog Babee, watching the sun rise. Shirley loved the weather, thunderstorms, sunrises and sunsets. Her family finds comfort knowing she is enjoying the heavenly skies with her Lord and Savior and with her husband Hal. Shirley will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. SERVICES Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Funeral Services will be on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 10:00am at the funeral home chapel, with interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
