In high school, he started dating his devoted wife, Elizabeth Rude. As a young teen, he learned the value of working hard at the Ragsdale Airport. Learning to fly was a nice bonus. Walter also studied at the National University of Mexico, University of Washington, Massachusetts General Hospital, and as a Medical Intern at the University of Pittsburgh. He served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer, Lt., USPHS, CDC Illinois. As a Neurology resident at Washington University in St. Louis, he worked tirelessly at Barnes Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Hospital. Dr. Buell, with his partner, started The Neurology Clinic of San Antonio. In addition, Dr. Buell taught as a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the UT Health Science Center SA. During this time, he studied at Queen Square, London, considered the birthplace of Neurology. After 26 years in practice, he retired to Austin and worked for TXDARS in the Disabilities area. Walter was a member of Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity; a medical staff officer and served as President of Santa Rosa Hospital SA; a founding member and President of the Texas Neurological Society, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He attended House of Prayer SA, Concordia Lutheran Church SA, and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Austin and served on the Health Committee. Preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Sydney Buell, and Ralph Lewin Buell, Jr., he is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Elizabeth; his children, Jeffrey E. Buell (Melinda), Robert J. Buell (Veenu); his grandchildren, Reagan Buell, Rhett Buell, Isabella Buell. Also, relatives Franklin Rude (Phillis), Eleanor Kreneck (Lynwood), Joe Rude (Carolyn) and their families, Buell nieces and nephews, and many good friends. Special thanks to his aides Jessica, Anita, Corey, and hospice nurse, April for exceptional care. Walter valued his family and enjoyed traveling with them. Favorite adventures took them to Europe, Chile, Colorado, and Alaska. He enjoyed watching his sons play water polo, and always looked forward to his grandchildren’s activities. He loved the Texas Longhorns, attending UT football games, and raising his Hook ‘Em Horns. The family will cherish these special times with him. His dry sense of humor and quick intelligent wit will be missed. Live long and prosper. Visitation is on Monday, October 25, 2021, and a memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Bill Tucker officiating. Private burial will precede visitation.
