Alan P. Miller, Moms loving husband and our loving father, passed from this earth into the arms of the Lord on September 18, 2006. Dad was 60 years old. After a two-year battle with cancer, he died holding the hand of his devoted wife, Suntal Miller. She and his three adult children survive him. Dad was born on February 28, 1946 in Paterson, New Jersey to Julius and Marion Miller. He graduated from Iowas Central College in 1968 with a B.A. in psychology, and then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge in 1972, he married Mom, adopted his stepson Yuri, and started working for USAA. After relocating to San Antonio in 1975, he had two additional children, Ivan and Naomi. Dad received his MBA from UTSA in 1980, and continued to work loyally for USAA as a systems analyst for the past 31 years. He also enjoyed teaching computer science for the Alamo Community College District on nights and weekends. He taught at San Antonio College and more recently at Northwest Vista College, where he completed his spring semester course this year despite his advancing illness. Dad was a devout Christian and simple family man who spent most of his time and all of his money taking care of his wife and children. While living in San Antonio, he had attended St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and Concordia Lutheran Church. He was an active member of Gracepoint Church at the time of his death. He was a faithful husband who provided for his wife. Dad believed in the power and importance of education, which is one of the reasons he liked to teach. He put us through college and lived to see all three of his children enter medical school. Dad was diagnosed two years ago with ocular melanoma a rare cancer of the eye. His primary tumor was successfully treated but he was discovered to have liver metastases one year ago. He struggled courageously with his illness, but despite several rounds of therapy his condition worsened. He died at Methodist Hospital on Monday, September 18, 2006 just before 4 AM. Our family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Kyriakos Papadopoulos and his staff at the CTRC who did their best to treat Dads disease. We are indebted to our fathers physician, Dr. Homero Garza, without whose bedside care and guidance during his final hours he would have suffered greatly. We are grateful to all of the friends, neighbors, and relatives who prayed for and supported Dad during his illness. We are thankful for the sacrifices Dad made for his family, and we appreciate everything he did for Mom and for us. Though we know he has departed us for a home with God, we are heartbroken with our loss. There are no words to express the emptiness and ache now left inside each of us. We all loved Dad very, very much. However, we must remember he has gone to a better place where he is free from the illness and pain that he suffered during his final months. And while we will miss him dearly, we know we will see him again one day.
