Asunción Medina Hernandez, lovingly known as “Susie”, was called home to be with the Lord on March 14, 2026 at the age of 90. Born in Asherton, Texas (known informally as “Cheto”) on August 15, 1935, to Alejandra and Silverio Medina, Susie was the third of six children. As a young teenager, she learned the value of hard work as she labored in the seasonal onion and cotton fields alongside her siblings in Asherton and Anton, Texas. During, and following her years of schooling within the Asherton School District, she was involved in many celebratory functions and competitions, became quite popular in “Cheto”, and was often sought after because of her enthusiastic and successful participation in different contests. To that end, she was voted “Queen of Cinco de Mayo” in Asherton, Texas. As a young adult, she was introduced to San Antonio, periodically working at the original Finck Cigar Manufacturing Warehouse. On June 24th, 1956, she married her first-love sweetheart, Patricio Islas Hernandez, with whom she shared countless memories, travels, and three sons. Patricio joined the Air Force Ranks and as a military family, they lived in London, England, and Clovis, New Mexico; finally relocating to San Antonio in 1966. Susie dedicated her life’s work to the cosmetology industry, as a beautician and owner of “Susie’s Beauty Shop”, where she retired after greater than 50 years of service. She earned the respect and admiration of clients, family and friends, some of which became life-long friends. Susie had many life achievements, including being a faithful servant of God, devoted wife and mother, and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very caring, generous and friendly person, with a good sense of humor. She will be remembered for her kind heart and her warm, welcoming hospitality. Her door was always open, frequently offering compassionate support and helping people through difficult situations. Susie’s greatest happiness in life was her family. She had a way of bringing people together, through family gatherings, shared meals, or simple moments filled with joy and laughter. She will be deeply missed. Her loving memory and beautiful spirit will live on in the hearts of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Patricio, and her sisters Maria Medrano and Elida Rendon. She is survived by her devoted sons, John Hernandez and partner Graciela Williams (grandchildren Aleyda, John Patrick, Alyssa, and Ricco); Pat Hernandez, Jr. and wife Becky (grandchildren-Yvette, Aaron, Erica, and Steven); and Alan Hernandez and wife Laura (grandchildren-Vincente, Christina, Corey, Aleck, and Danielle); two sisters, Cristina Martinez and Maricela Braithwaite; brother, Mario Medina and wife Irene; and 26 great-grandchildren. Memorial funeral services to honor Susie’s remarkable life will be held as follows: Rosary will be recited Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 9:15 AM, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 4222 SW Loop 410. Graveside service will follow at Mission Park Funeral Chapels and Cemetery, 1700 SE Military Dr.
