Brian Robert Sperl was born in Belvidere, Illinois on March 5, 1960 and entered eternal rest on Friday, November 22, 2019. Brian spent the earliest years of his life on the family farm. His mother and two brothers moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin where Brian lived until after his graduation from high school. As a child, he loved sports, especially hockey. Despite the city he grew up in, Brian was an avid Detroit Lions fan, happiest when they would beat the Cowboys or Packers. After a Lions victory over your team, a phone call was sure to follow. Brian moved to San Antonio in the early 1980’s where he honed his outstanding cooking skills. He worked as head chef in some of San Antonio’s finest restaurants, such as Grey Moss Inn and the Bayou’s on the River Walk. His skills as a chef were well known, if you ever had the privilege of a Brian prepared meal, you understand the gift he was given and the expertise with which he used it. Indeed, Brian was “Born to be a Chef” and took great pleasure in cooking for others. He often used that skill to give back to the community. While working as the chef at Baptist Memorial Hospital Downtown in San Antonio, he would hold annual Veterans Day luncheons for wounded warriors. Those meals were absolutely amazing. His love and appreciation for veterans developed through his service in the Air Force. Brian also hosted outings for wounded warriors to a local area ranch with a fishing tank. And of course that included a meal prepared by him. The passion he possessed as a chef for cooking was surpassed only by the love he showed to his wife Debi; son Ross and his family. Brian is considered by Debi as God’s greatest gift to her. Their love will always be cherished deep in her heart. Brian was there to raise his son and loved him with all his heart. They spent many wonderful days cooking, camping and fishing together. Brian is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Debi Sperl. His son, Brian Ross Sperl, his wife Michelle and sons Travis and Bradley. His mother Bonnie Caudle and father Robert Fritz. His two brothers Kelly Sperl, his wife Lynn Sperl and their children Kassi and Kyle. Todd Sperl and his wife Andrea Sperl and their children Allie and Mac. His sister, Missy Shorb, husband Todd and their children Jake, Ava and Parker. Along with numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Brian Robert Sperl, 10:00 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 6914 Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, November 27, 2019. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be written to the Wounded Warrior Project.
