Charles O. Peavler, or COP as his friends and family called him, was a well-known and friendly presence in the South Texas meat industry. People admired him not only for his skill, but also for his kindness and the pride he took in his work. Charles passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at 90 years old. While many people were familiar with the ranching side of the business, Charles focused on the craft of the meat market. He believed serving the community was an important responsibility. To him, a cut of beef was more than food—it was the centerpiece of family meals, holiday gatherings, and a symbol of South Texas pride. He was a perfectionist, always dedicated to raising and selecting the best beef and honoring the traditions of his trade. COP did more than just run a market; he taught his customers what made meat truly special. By choosing local South Texas ranches and keeping high standards, he earned a reputation for top quality. He was respected in the North American meat industry and was a familiar face at the Union Stock Yards in San Antonio. As a member of the Southwestern Cattle Raisers, producers and restaurateurs often turned to him for advice. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence that sets a high standard for the regional meat industry. In his retirement years, COP loved going to garage sales and enjoyed the challenge of bargaining for a better price. Whether he found a rare treasure or just a good story, he enjoyed the excitement of the search and meeting new people along the way. Charles is survived by his sons Kevin M. Peavler and his wife Elizabeth, Lance S. Peavler, and Eric Jason Peavler and his wife Anna Obidos; his sister Virginia Mollere; his grandchildren Alora Ann Peavler and her husband Jose Portillo, Kyle M. Peavler, Avery A. Peavler, and Liam O. Peavler; his great-grandchildren Aubrey A. Peavler-Portillo and Noah S. Peavler-Portillo; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Charles loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always finding joy in their company and pride in their achievements. He treasured every moment with them and leaves them with memories full of love. Charles Peavler was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie E. Peavler; his son, Charles, and daughter-in-law, Dorris Peavler; his father, Charles W. Peavler; his mother, Ruth L. Leyendechker; and his brothers, Harold and Clarence Peavler. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South, 1700 SE Military Drive, San Antonio, TX 78214. The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the same place. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South. A celebration of life will take place at Good News Lutheran Church, 11029 Old Corpus Christi Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78223, after the service.
