Delma Lee Blalock

On August 22, 2026, Delma Lee Blalock, 84, was reunited with her husband of 58 years, Lurtice Davis Blalock, and the family members she had missed for so long. Before she passed, Delma said she was going honky-tonkin’ with everyone when they were together again. Her family takes comfort in picturing such a perfect heavenly reunion. Delma was born on March 10, 1942, in Arizona to Lois and Hilburn Godwin, one of six brothers and sisters. She grew up in San Antonio and graduated from East Central High School. In 1963, Delma married Davis shortly before his deployment to Vietnam. Upon his return, their son, Yancy Blalock, was born. Delma and Davis made their homes in San Antonio and the Boerne area, living in houses Davis built for their family. Delma worked at the San Antonio State Hospital and later became a successful business owner. She opened The Rocking Horse, a children’s clothing store in North Star Mall, to pay for Yancy’s private-school education. Through her hard work and the store’s success, she paid for his entire education while helping dress many San Antonio children in beautiful clothing. Being a grandmother seemed to be the role Delma was born for. When she and Davis were choosing their grandparent names, Davis suggested Dede. After years of saying “Delma, dammit!” he thought Dede would be the perfect shortened version. Dede stuck, and she never got tired of telling the story. For the grandchildren who spent much of their childhood at her house, Dede’s house was home. They were always welcome, no matter the time of day or whether she was even home. With children always playing outside and toys everywhere, people sometimes mistook her house for a daycare. Delma loved her plants, working in her yard, shopping, a good morning Bible study over her cup of coffee, and making people laugh with her silly pranks. Few things made her laugh harder than watching someone fall on America’s Funniest Home Videos. Delma showed her love through doing and giving. She bent over backward for the people she loved, placed flowers on relatives’ graves long after they passed, and kept her family connected through her care and stories. Delma was preceded in death by her husband, Lurtice Davis Blalock, her parents, Lois and Hilburn Godwin, and her siblings, Carrie, Linda, Joel, Noel, and Evelyn Kay. She is survived by her son, Yancy Blalock, daughter-in-law, Suzanne, her grandchildren Ivy Blalock, Yancy Blalock Jr. and Leah, Camilla and Brody Geoghegan, Reagan Blalock, Avery Blalock, and Boone Blalock, great-grandchildren, Yancy “Tripp” Blalock III and Margaret Geoghegan, and many loving nephews and their families. Visitation and burial will be private for the family. Family and friends are invited to gather at Delma’s home on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to remember her, tell stories, and celebrate a life built around loving and caring for others.
