Diego B. Bernal Jr. passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a life defined by hard work, determination, and an unmistakable love for family, friends and those he met along the way. Born on August 16,1938, our dad was a man who combined his professional expertise with a deep passion for helping others and his commitment to making a difference in people’s lives. His compassion and generosity left a lasting impact on countless individuals. Our dad was very proud of his West Side roots. He graduated from Lanier High School class of ’57. Our dad grew up with limited means but was driven by a strong desire to succeed. He turned his challenges into purpose. He completed his higher education at St. Mary’s University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in economics. He was the director of student aid at St. Phillip’s College for 44 years, Honorable discharge from the United States Air Force in 1981, active in the 433rd TAW Kelly AFB, retired after dedicating 30 years to the United Staes Air Force Reserves as Senior Master Sergeant in 1994 Our dad’s second passion was coaching CYO baseball for St. Leo’s Catholic church for 10 years. He loved the game, but even more, he cherished the opportunity to mentor young boys and watch them grow into fine respectable strong young men and earning the lifelong title of “Coach”. As a father, he was our guide, our protector and our biggest fan. He was our constant source of support, always leading us with unconditional love, wisdom and encouragement. He always lifted us up and stood by us through every moment of our lives. Diego was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, grandpa and great grandpa. He is reunited in the Lord’s House with parents, Diego Pena Bernal, Bertha Barrientos Bernal, brothers, Armando Bernal, Rogelio Sr., and Oscar Bernal. He is survived by his children, Diego J. Bernal, III, Anna Marie Bernal, Veronica Bernal, his grandchildren, Joshua Alcoser (Leeann Sanchez), Jacob Cherry (Nayla Caballero), Emmalise Cutter, and Sophia Bernal, great grandchildren, Joshua Jr. and Juleeanna Alcoser, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins among other family members. We take comfort in knowing he is at peace, he will be deeply missed. Our dad’s life was a testament of compassion, service and love for all. His spirit will leave a long-lasting impact through the lives he touched, the love he gave and the example he set for us all.
