Elmer Grant West January 20, 1930 – March 17, 2021 Elmer Grant West met his Lord and Savior face to face on March 17, 2021 at the age of 91. Preceding him in death were his parents, Chester E. and Zedna (Gore) West. Elmer, affectionally known as Grant, was born January 20, 1930 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Grant served in both the United States Army and US Air Force, where he would eventually retire as Tech Sergeant. During his service Grant found himself in many places around the world. It was in Japan that he met the love of his life, Sachiko Uemura, they were married soon after. Over the next several years until his retirement Grant and Sachiko traveled to several places in the U.S.. Along the way they had their children: Donald, Angela and Thomas. In the late 60’s after retiring from the Air Force, Grant and Sachiko along with their children made their permanent home in San Antonio, Texas. There Grant would spend most of his time outside in the garden with his wife. He enjoyed working with his hands and exploring the world on the internet. He worked on gardens and cars, helped his eldest son extend his home, and emailed friends as far away as Japan. Grant was a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, and beloved member of Mayfield Park Baptist Church where he held a role there as a Sunday School teacher. He spent hours pouring attention to detail into his lessons. Grant knew how important that hour on a Sunday could be and he wanted to share the Lord’s Word. Left to cherish his memory and many stories is his beloved wife of 65 years, Sachiko U. West; daughter Angela McHugh and husband Rick; sons, Thomas West and wife Bella, Donald West and wife Peggy; sister, Betty Salvi; brother, Richard West and wife Marge; grandchildren: Jessica Perez and husband Michael, Kristin West, Tommy West and wife Stephanie, Warren West, Brian West and wife Lora; great grandchildren: Sierra Perez, Michael Perez, Jr., Silas West, Brianna West and Lauren West as well as a host of extended family, church family, and friends. Funeral Service for Elmer Grant West will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South with an interment being held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery immediately following. Grant’s family will receive friends beginning at 12 p.m. to service time.
