Esther Sophie Wagener Wenske Mimi passed from this life on January 3, 2015 at the age of 94. She was born to August Wagener and Ida Riechers Wagener February 1, 1920 in Brenham, Texas. In May of 1936 she married Bennie Wenske. It was only after her children were in their teenage years that she started working outside the home. She worked at Bruner's Department Store, Carl's Department Store, and finally at Joske's Department Store in downtown San Antonio. She worked at Joske's for a number of years before retiring. She enjoyed going to the annual Joske's employee's reunions to visit with her former co-workers and friends. Her hobbies included dancing, sewing, cooking, baking, and gardening. Esther will be remembered for her Red Velvet Cake, which she would bring to family functions. Relatives would stand in line to get the first piece of her cake. She never went to visit family or friends without bringing a dish of food or dessert. Her neighbors benefitted from the casseroles, soups, and stews she would share with them. She was a long time parishioner of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church. She also, did volunteer work at Sts. Peter and Paul thrift shop for a number of years. She especially enjoyed going to the Wenske and Wagener family reunions. She is preceded in death by her husband Bennie, their oldest son Norman Wenske, and granddaughter Pamela Wenske. Esther was the last living child of seven children born to August and Ida Wagener. Esther cared for her mother, Ida, for 7 years in her home until she was physically unable to care for her any longer. She is survived by daughter Diane & husband Harold Friesen of Woodstock, Georgia, son Kenneth Wenske & wife Carol of San Antonio, Texas, son Dennis Wenske & wife Connie of Houston, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Extra special thanks and love to daughter-in-law, Carol Wenske, who would go to the nursing home every day to visit and help feed Mimi. Many thanks to the employees of Pecan Valley Nursing Home for the care given during the past two years. Visitation will be held at Dellcrest Funeral Home located on 2023 S.W.W White Road, San Antonio, TX 78222 on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 5:00-9:00pm. A rosary is to be recited on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 10:30am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church located on 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78223, a funeral mass will be held at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX 78266.
