Tributes

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our Father, Jose “Joe” V. Romo on August 30, 2018 at the age of 89. Dad died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Mary Louise Romo (2010), his parents Juan and Ysabel Villalpando Romo, and his eight siblings, Juan, Ignacio, Jesse, Anita, Consuelo, Rebecca, Velia, and Margaret. Dad was a loving father, husband, and grandfather who always put his family first. He worked since he was a young child to help earn money for his family, was determined to be successful in life and follow his dreams. Dad was a very proud graduate of Sidney Lanier High School and served in the United States Army for four years including a two-year tour in Germany during the occupation immediately following the end of WWII. After his honorable discharge, he returned to San Antonio where he met and married Mary Louse Guzman in 1955. Mom and Dad lived in Southeast San Antonio where they raised three children, Lawrence Romo (Birgit), Nancy Gilbertson (David), and Patrick Romo. They were also proud grandparents of two loving grandchildren Nicholas Gilbertson and Zachary Gilbertson. Dad worked as a Federal Employee at Kelly Air Force Base where he oversaw computer operations for 25 years. After retirement from Federal Service, he attended St. Phillip’s College to earn a Real Estate License. He sold homes for many years before retiring again to spend more time with his family. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, where he was active in the men’s club and Guadalupana’s. As a life time member of American Legion Alamo Post #2, he devoted a lot of time to local Veteran Associations. He was also active in his community where he coached little league baseball and Pop Warner Football, and local politics. Dad loved playing sports, especially baseball, belonging to a city league back in the 1950s. Later in life Dad spent much of his free time keeping up with his favorite teams, especially the Spurs where he started taking us to games back in the 1970s. He also traveled to Hawaii, Germany, and Normandy, France during the 50th anniversary marking the end of WWII. We are heartbroken by our loss but comforted by the knowledge that he is now with mom in God’s house. .
