Maria L. Mendez Coronado’s story began on May 11, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, where she was born to Alfonso Torres and Juanita Gutierrez. From the very beginning, Maria carried a quiet strength and a generous heart — qualities that would define her life for nearly a century. She grew up in a close knit family, learning early the value of hard work, faith, and caring for others. As she built a family of her own, those values only deepened. Maria devoted her life to her children, guiding them with patience, love, and a steady presence that made her home a place of comfort for anyone who walked through the door. Maria knew loss, too. She was preceded in death by her brother, George Torres, Larry Torres and her sister, Margaret Torres; beloved children David Mendez, Maria Jo Mendez, and Yolanda Gonzales — heartbreaks she carried with grace and resilience. Even through sorrow, she continued to give, to serve, and to love. She survives by her beloved children, Gloria Casias, Jose Mendez III, Elsie Ramirez, and Corine Mendez. Her legacy lives on in her 16 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, each one a reminder of the deep roots she planted. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were touched by her warmth. Maria spent many years volunteering with the Baptist Medical Center Volunteer Department and the City of San Antonio Senior Center. She had a gift for making people feel seen and cared for, whether she was offering a helping hand or simply sharing a smile. Her joy came from simple pleasures — singing, dancing, sewing, tending her garden, and settling in to watch her favorite classic shows and films. John Wayne movies, The Rifleman, and The Andy Griffith Show were familiar companions in her home. To those who knew her, Maria was more than a mother, grandmother, or friend. She was a source of comfort, a steady presence, and a reminder of the beauty found in kindness and everyday moments. Her absence leaves a quiet space in many hearts, but her spirit lives on in the love she gave so freely. Visitation will begin on Monday, March 30, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.; the family will say a few words at 6:00 p.m. with a rosary to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Brookehill Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church with a procession from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery II.
