It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude, for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Mary Margaret (Zook) Wauson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Mary peacefully departed this world on April 21, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by the love and warmth of family at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Mary was born on June 10, 1933, in Wilson County, Texas, to Lawrence H. Zook Sr. and Bertie Lee (Goode) Zook. From a young age, Mary exemplified the values of kindness, resilience, and compassion, traits she carried with her throughout her life's journey. Mary's life was marked by her unwavering dedication to family and service. She shared 20 years as a devoted USAF dependent, accompanying her husband, John W. Wauson Sr., to various Air Force bases, including Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; Kincheloe AFB, Michigan, Blytheville AFB, Arkansas; and Lackland AFB, Texas, before finally settling in San Antonio in 1970. During these years, she was an integral part of Protestant chapel programs, fostering a sense of community and support. Professionally, Mary found joy and success as an Avon Representative for over 40 years, earning numerous awards for her outstanding contributions, including an all expenses paid trip to the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Her career was a testament to her work ethic and ability to connect with others, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. Mary was a pillar of strength and faith within her community. A dedicated member of Epworth United Methodist Church since 1970, she enriched the lives of many as a Sunday School teacher. She also supported John and with her involvement with Kairos Ministries, along with her friends Robert and June Weir, where their Kairos team provided comfort and hope through Prison Ministries. Mary's passion extended to the world of sports, where she was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs. At one Spurs game, mom had court side seats. It was probably the best time in her life, especially when mom touched Tony Parker when he was in front of her, and he was backing up toward her! Her enthusiasm and team spirit were contagious and brought joy to those around her while watching her teams on her television. Throughout her life, Mary was characterized by her selflessness and nurturing spirit. She was a caregiver in the truest sense, always ready to provide support and solace to family members in need, whether they were on hospice or recovering from medical procedures. Her patience and sacrifice were a testament to her loving nature. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband John W. Wauson Sr.; her cherished daughter Karen Lynn (Wauson) Martinez; Sisters Lois Wauson and Elizabeth Brown; and her brothers Lawrence Zook Jr. and Robert Zook. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her sons John W. Wauson Jr. and his wife Kimberly (Renshaw); Timothy W. Wauson and his wife Jesselita (Solis); and Jeffrey K. Wauson Sr. and his wife Carmen (Mestey). She will be deeply missed by her brothers Donald Zook; Samuel E. Zook and his wife Rose; sister, Gerry Weiding; dear friends Rafael Jimenez Leal, Bennie Jones, and Robert Weir. Mary also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and13 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held on May 1, 2026. Family viewing is from 4PM-5PM and Public Viewing is from 5PM – 8PM at Mission Park Funeral Chapel, located at 1700 SE Military Dr., San Antonio, TX 78214. A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 12:00 Noon at Mission Park. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in Mary's memory. There will also be a time of fellowship and reflection after interment at Mission Park. It will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 5718 Pecan Valley Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78223. The Wauson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Elara Caring Hospice team for their compassionate guidance and care during Mary's hospice journey. Their compassion and faith effectively prepared our family for Mary’s passing in a respectful manner. Mary Margaret (Zook) Wauson will forever remain in our hearts as a beacon of love, faith, and selflessness. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
