Otto Richter Jr. passed away on October 28, 2020 at the age of 79. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Otto and Aleen Richter, sisters Rosalie Bolner and Christina Engel. Otto is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patti Richter, children Paul Richter (Ann Richter) and Kathy Garcia (John Garcia), granddaughters Kara and Maya Garcia, sisters Barbara Hajek and Joan Kennedy, brother Tom Richter and numerous nieces and nephews. Otto was born on September 26, 1941 in San Antonio, Tx. He graduated from Central Catholic High School with a Diploma of Honor in 1959. He then enrolled in St. Mary's University where he studied Chemistry and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. While at St. Mary's Univerity, Otto signed up for the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and he studied the art of artillary. At graduation, he was commssioned by the Army as a Second Liutenant. Because of his love of flying and the fact that he had already obtained hes pilot's license, Otto was stationed at United States Army Aviation School, graduating in 1964. Otto continued to serve his country flying reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War until 1966. After returning home from the war, Otto asked Patti to marry him. They were married at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in November 1966. Following in his father's footsteps, Otto joined the family business of Richter's ButterKrust Bakeries, founded by Willian L. Richter in 1882. There he learned the different operations of the production line, which started in the mixing room, went through the hand twisting station and continued to the ovens. He understood the importance the oven's time and temperature to make sure the bread was baked to perfection. He came to understand all aspects of baking bread from loading the ingredients into the mixer to packaging the bread into the iconic blue-gingham Butter Krust bread bags. Through the years, he worked his way up to Vice President of Production. Otto, was a baker through and through, his work was his passion. In 1968, Otto and Patti were delighted when their son Paul was born. They were overjoyed when their family increased with the birth of their daughter, Kathy, in 1970. Otto relished the times when his kids would come down for a visit, where he could show them the many facets of the bakery. One of Otto's proudest moments was when both Paul and Kathy chose to work at the bakery. Some of Otto's other interests were coin collecting, reading books (John Grisham was one of his favorite authors), barbequing for his family, volunteering at his church as a Eucharist Minister, singing in the church choir and supporting the church festival with loaves of bread. In the 1980's, he taught himself how to write software for home and bakery use. Otto enjoyed his family and loved them very much and they loved him right back. Visitation is Monday, November 2 at Mission Park North, 3401 Cherry Ridge, San Antonio Tx 78230 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. The Rosary will start at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass is Tuesday, November 3 at St. Mathews Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Rd. San Antonio Tx, 78230, at 10:00A M, Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetary.
