The love and joy that freely flowed from Patricia “Patty” Bryant Carter, were a blessing to all that she encountered. Her greatest joy was making others happy. Her kindness and generosity were matched by her sweetness and sense of humor. Her compassion, beauty, and happiness graced us for 70 years as The Lord called her home on January 1, 2017. Patty was born in Jackson, Mississippi on November 6, 1946, to Dorothy Ruth and John “Buddy” Wesley Bryant, Jr. She was the oldest of three and the only girl. Her gifts of love and nurturing were first bestowed upon her brother John “Johnny” Wesley Bryant, III, who was 14 months younger to the day than her and then given to her brother William Jerome Bryant who joined the family when Patty was 9. Her mother recognized the natural beauty Patty was blessed with and as an infant, entered her into a beauty pageant in which she won. She spent the first 16 years of her life in Jackson surrounded by her abundant family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Patty would often share stories of her time in Jackson with her children and grandchildren, as Patty deeply cherished her family. In 1962, after her family settled in Houston, Texas, Patty met the love of her life, Alan Curtis Carter, Sr. Patty graduated from Westbury High School in Houston, attended Massey Business College, and worked for Mercantile Bank all the while still dating Alan. In 1967, Patty accepted Alan’s marriage proposal during a phone call from him while in Naval Bootcamp and they were married shortly thereafter on November 3, 1967. In March of 1969, while Alan was in Vietnam, Patty gave birth to their son, Alan Curtis Carter, Jr. In November of 1977, Alan and Patty welcomed the birth of their daughter, Linda Renee Carter. In 1980, Alan and Patty moved their family to San Antonio. Patty’s sweet nature and love of live easily attracted new friends in San Antonio, which would later become family. When Patty wasn’t devoting her time to her husband or children, Patty enjoyed reading and spending time with her friends. After several years of primarily being a wife and mother, Patty went back into the banking industry. She retired in 2009 from Bank of America after 20 years of service in their Military Bank Overseas Division. Patty spent the remaining years of life with her family which was her greatest treasure. Patty is survived by her husband of 49 years, Alan Curtis Carter, Sr., her son Alan Curtis Carter, Jr., her daughter Linda Carter Helton, her granddaughters Samantha Cheyenne Dent and Kendall Ann Rutherford, of San Antonio, Texas; and her brother William Jerome Bryant of Little Rock, Arkansas. Patty was preceded by her parents and brother, John Wesley Bryant, III. Patty’s love, sweetness, and beautiful blue eyes will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
