Mrs. Cyrus H. Avey, Jr. Ruth Marie Rackley Avey affectionally known as Duckie by her family passed away and joined her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 04, 2013. She is survived by her husband Cyrus H. Avey, Jr., her three daughters and their husbands, Mollie J. Shipler Errol, Anna M. Pratt David, Mary E. Larson Tom and her son Cyrus H. Avey III wife-Juanita. She is further survived by her pride and joy group of six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Duckie was the most loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family always came first and foremost. She was born and raised in rural Medina County at the small community of Blackcreek, Texas on July 5, 1924. She was the ninth child of William Henry Rackley and Etta Ellen Seeley Rackley, a pioneer farming family in Medina County. She was part of a grand family of 5 boys Henry, Seeley, Billy, George, and Lee Wilson and 5 girls Ellen, Mary, Jonni, Duckie and Dollie. She was the last surviving child of a family that still to this day has a family reunion at the church in Blackcreek with almost 100 direct descendants of the original 10 children. She accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized as a young girl at Blackcreek Baptist Church and was an active and long time member of Hot Wells Baptist Church in San Antonio. On June 27, 1942 she married Cyrus H. Avey, Jr. at Devine, Texas after a courtship of 46 days. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June, 2012 with a large gathering of family and friends. This union produced 3 daughters and 1 son. Many of her friends and family members treasure the stained glass pieces that she made for them. She also had a great knowledge of plants and a "green thumb" that shows in the flower gardens that surround the Avey family home where she raised and was a loving mother to her four children. Being raised on a farm she learned and acquired a love for all things of nature, plants, animals, the sky and the seasons of the year. She thought it was almost a cardinal sin to cut down a tree. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff and doctors in the intensive care unit at Mission Trails Baptist Hospital and the staff of New Century Hospice for the tender and loving care that was shown to our much loved mother and wife. Visitation for Ruth will be at Mission Park Funeral Chapel South, Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. The Funeral Service will be celebrated 2:30 P.M., Sunday, June 9, 2013 also at the Funeral Home. The interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South.
