WILLIAM (BILL) BATEMAN 7/29/1956 – 3/27/2026 Born in Beaumont, TX, middle son of 3 children, Bill was an overachiever from the beginning. After graduating high school, he worked his way through college and earned his degree in Criminal Justice while working for the District Attorney’s office in Houston. He married and moved with his wife and daughter to San Antonio where he worked in insurance recovery. After a few years, he began his own subrogation firm and soon became a new dad to a baby boy. The family separated and in 1992 he met Marilyn Anderson through mutual friends, a relationship which continued for over 30 years until his death. In 1996, they entered into a partnership purchasing Fiasco Cocktails and worked as a team in the business until they both retired and the bar was sold in January of 2023. Bill Bateman was a man of many personalities. He could be charming, personable, generous, a caring and trusted friend, one who would do whatever was necessary for someone in need. He could also be rather rude and obnoxious, and the next day would be totally apologetic. He was a jokester and enjoyed amusing and entertaining his friends and customers with a joke, a funny story, or a riddle. Bill was fiercely competitive in any game, but especially pool and shuffleboard and excelled at both. His favorite saying was “Anything worth doing is worth overdoing”. He loved music trivia and would challenge anyone to beat him with a song, an artist, an album or music history. Sports? He was there (especially football), and American history, just ask. He enjoyed good food and especially liked trying new restaurants (but the different or unusual cuisines not so much). Bill and Marilyn both loved travel and took a number of cruises, (one included hitting an iceberg on a cruise to Alaska) and a number of memorable trips throughout the US and Mexico. Bill lost his older sister Linda Benton, his mother Margaret Bateman his son, Justin Bateman, and nephew David Scroggins a number of years ago, but he is survived by his life partner Marilyn, younger sister Barbara Allen from Georgia; his niece Kimberly Prehm, also in Georgia; stepdaughter Amy (Shannon) Gordon; and grandchildren: Carter Bateman, Callie Key, and Peyton and Abby Gordon.
